Default Sicario: Day of the Soldado 4K & Blu-ray - HDD Reviews

Sicario: Day of the Soldado finds ample and interesting reason enough for a second invasion over the border but proves that not every film needs a sequel. While a solid entry and it's great to see Brolin and Del Toro side by side again outside of a Marvel flick, its tight premise is stretched thin in an effort to build a franchise foundation for further adventures. Well worth watching, but not on the same level as Sicario.

Josh: "Reviews were mixed, with most critics calling it adequate but unexceptional. Some had very harsh things to say about its negative portrayal of Mexicans and its perceived xenophobic tendencies."

Sicario 2 could have avoided much of this criticism if it unfolded
some of its plot. There are hints of greater depth, where themes
of exploring the complexity of these problems are on the screen
or in the script. But they are on the screen in the faded, dark
corner. Or in the script in a throwaway line, that needed to be
expanded on.

Sicario 2 has the human traffickers say that the poor, striving for
a better life across the border, that they are just sheep. And while
crossing a river into the U.S. the weaker, older ones are swept
away by the currents. But it's literally in the faded darkness in the
background of the screen frame. The film needed a follow-up shot
of dead bodies in the bright morning of the next day, to show the
gruesome causalities of this conflict.

And the major plot hook is that Muslim terrorists are using the
drug cartels to enter the U.S. across the southern border. But in a
blink-and-you'll-miss it moment, it is revealed that...
Spoiler
the suicide bombers are from New Jersey; they are homegrown
terrorists.

And the response is this: that changes the narrative. That's it!
It totally changes the narrative, but the film literally just devotes a
line in the script that just states that fact, that the story changed.
Sicario 2 needed to say, hey, because of our mistake, we started a
Spoiler
cartel war by illegally crossing a border, violating a foreign land.
We must have caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent Mexicans
from the fallout. The Americans kidnapping a young daughter
DIDN'T lead to retaliatory kidnappings of other innocent children?!
We started a war, and we were wrong about our intelligence.

Sicario 2 did not expand its plot on those consequences, it only
acknowledged with a small "that changes the narrative" footnote.

There's a lot to like in Sicario 2, but we, the audience, were cheated
out of a powerful scene.

The situation needed to be wiped clean. To have no loose ends.
The 2 major characters were caught in this cosmic whirlwind that
conspired to bring these 2 gunfighters into a Mexican standoff (okay,
okay a standoff in Mexico is more accurate).

But I guess that showdown is what Sicario 3 is for, if it ever happens.
