Director Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece could be coming to Ultra HD Blu-ray later this year.

Was the original blu-ray/HD DVD release scanned in 4K?? I thought I remember reading that somewhere. Maybe I'm wrong.
I remember watching it last about a year ago on blu-ray and thinking that the clarity and detail of it could've been a bit stronger. Hopefully when the 4K UHD release comes out and remastered 1080p blu-ray comes out with it.

This is funny, I was JUST looking on amazon about this movie because I hadn't seen it for a LONG time and can't find my blu ray at home LOL

I could be wrong, but I believe it was scanned from a 35mm reduction element, not the original 65mm. I'm not sure if it was done at 2k or 4k, but am thinking it was probably 2k given when the work was done.

Ideally, the 65mm negative should be scanned at 8k and then downsampled to 4k for the restoration workflow.

I sure hope they do this right! I haven't had a good copy since my HD DVDs started to have problems.

I don't want to buy the Blu because I'll wait for 4k Blu. Please hurry and make it a masterpieces. Let's hope and pray for Dolby Vision! Sadly I don't think 20th Century uses DV.

2001 is owned by Warner Bros, not Fox. Given the lack of Dolby Vision on Blade Runner 2049, though, that may not make a difference.

Well at least some of their titles have it... So at least a chance. Let us all pray to the HDR gods!

I wish they would do The Shining or A Clockwork Orange instead. 2001 is easily my least favorite Kubrick movie that I've watched. It isn't bad, it's just... well I find it rather boring.

Amazon says: This title will be released on May 8, 2018.
I wonder if that's really the artwork. Looks the same as the steelbook Blu-ray.
