Holy Ratings Batman!

I am curious to see how this show was shot to get a 5 star AV rating. I will say it is on my wish list as I was eager to see what HBO has to offer us in 4K.

I'm curious about the Blu-ray review. The video description has just about every possible positive superlative thrown in, but then only gets four stars.

Now, I get that it doesn't look as good as the UHD version, but that's a different format and if we start rating relative to format, then it will basically be impossible for a Blu-ray to ever achieve 5 stars.

I really tried to like this series, in fact I watched the first 6 episodes. But found the unlikable characters, an overly confusing plot and an orgy of needless violence. I think it's one of those love it or hate it types and it just didn't click with me.

Great review Matthew! I think I need to check this out. Appreciate the detailed review (as always). Minor quibble:

"In the long, long ago before he became a best-selling novelist, Michael Crichton was a hot, in-demand screenwriter and director. With films like The Great Train Robbery, Coma, and the vastly under-appreciated Runaway under his belt, Crichton was certainly a reliable entertainer before he jumped ship and started writing novels."

If memory serves, he was writing novels before he started screenwriting/directing. At a minimum, I'm pretty sure The Great Train Robbery was based on his own book (a book I recommend, by the way).

Yes, Crichton started writing potboiler paperback thrillers under a pseudonym in order to pay his way through medical school without his professors knowing what he did with his free time. Eventually, he decided that he liked writing better than medicine and switched over full-time. His first book published under his own name, The Andromeda Strain, was a huge bestseller.

Crichton was certainly first-and-foremost an author who dabbled a little with movies, not the other way around.

Thanks Josh. I was pretty sure I remembered that correctly. I read Andromeda Strain very early in my life (when I was around 11 or 12) and then The Great Train Robbery. Followed that up by reading all of his works (I think) later in life, including those he published under the Lange pseudonym. He was a truly gifted writer. I've posted here before; Jurassic Park is one of maybe 4 books/films where I enjoyed both media equally (Congo and Timeline, on the other hand...not so much).

Again, great review Matthew. I hadn't heard much about this series but need to check it out.
