Default Dredd 4K - HDD Review

Bryan has reviewed Dredd on 4K UHD Blu-ray. While the 4K HDR/WCG video presentation offers a flawed-but-visible upgrade, this KILLER Dolby Atmos mix is the epitome of what an action movie should sound like.

The disc itself might be a new master but the source files are exactly the same. Lionsgate does this because they think every time they make a new master it stops piracy. In reality all it does is keep costs up and increases the chances of being incompatible with various players.
There wasn't anything wrong with the previous BD.

The best releases for 2D PQ are either the FR or JP release.

Except the subpar video quality.

I disagree with the video concerns of the previous BD disc. I am what you call a hyper critical person and did not see the issues described. I assume you own the previous one?

Previous one what? Has there been more than one release of Dredd?

Previous one yes, prior to THIS release.

The original Blu Rays 2D versions contrast is bad enough that I'd call it botched. The black level is all over the place, greens and red are over saturated. The 4K version looks like a different movie side by side. I'd kind of considered this movie to have a 'grindhouse' look based on the BD, bad color, bad contrast, lots of mosquito noise. The 4K version is MUCH more refined, looks nearly perfect!

Consequently I'd only ever seen this in 3D, as it looked better through glasses. It was like watching a new movie in 4K!

As I said earlier the FR disc, which I own, as well the JP disc have much better 2D PQ. Lionsgate put both the 3D and 2D on the same disc so the 2D image is just the left eye of the 3D image. The problem with this is that everything is over-brightened on the 3D image to compensate for 3D glasses. This causes issues with the black levels on the 2D image. The 2D image on the US disc also has worse compression than the FR and JP discs.
