Default Gear Review: Denon AVR-X8500H 13-Channel AV Receiver

Denon's top-of-the-line flagship model for 2018, the AVR-X8500H is the first mass-market A/V receiver to offer 13 channels of decoding. That makes it possible to listen to Dolby Atmos or DTS:X soundtracks in either 9.1.4 or 7.1.6 configurations. The unit also has almost every current bell and whistle you could possibly want in a receiver (and a bunch you'll probably never use). In terms of quality and performance, it's nearly impossible not to recommend. Be warned, however, that all those features come with a hefty price tag of $3,999.00. If that doesn't scare you off, it's definitely HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

So are you keeping it? If so, what are you doing with your other Denons and emotiva? Id love to hear about a few standout Atmos moments. Did it fit on your equipment rack or did you have to get a new one specifically for that one. Will you be posting more pictures or anything else on the Bonus View section?

I'm negotiating with Denon to keep it. My equipment rack has shelves with different heights, and it fit on the tallest shelf without issue.

I'm keeping the Emotiva amp but will sell the old Denon and one of my Marantzes. I'm actually keeping the other Marantz to extract voice-of-god speakers between the Top Middles. I'll write a blog post about that at some point.

I probably would go with the X6400H. As enticing as 13 channels and amps sounds, I do not ever foresee myself having a room big enough to house this effectively. However, for my existing 7 channel setup, adding 4 height speakers would be da bomb!

Something I always loved about Denon is the assignability. If I wanted a gaming system that used say Component 1 and Optical 2, I could assign it as such. Assign any input to any switch configuration.

Default X8500h is a beast

Hey all I just got mine today. Thing is a beast. I was up grading from a onkyo tx-rz920. So far after just a few hours, this has such a warm sound compared to the onkyo. I wasnt happy with onkyo. I will repost when I start using atmos amd the Aura 2d and 3d audio. What are people's diary thoughts on this unit. I am new to the forum.
thanks Mike

Warm sound? I guess I could ask what you thought of the Onkyo? Was it brash? I have enjoyed my Denons over the years and will likely stay brand loyal when I do eventually go Atmos/X.

I guess The sound just feels better more detailed then the 920 onkyo with movies and especially music .. Way more features like way more. I have had denon in the past. Love the unit. Runs cold. I just hooked up the atmos 7.1.2. Sounds amazing with the force awakens. Compared to the 920 doesn't even compare. Imo.
