‘The Hangover’ Dominates the Charts

The Hangover

What a Hangover.

The surprise hit theatrical comedy The Hangover, from Warner Home Video, shot to the top of both the national home video sales and rental charts its first week in stores, easily beating its two big theatrical competitors, Universal Studios’ Inglorious Basterds and Walt Disney Studios’ G-Force.

Inglorious Basterds finished second on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending Dec. 20, as well as on Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the same week. But it was a way-distant second, as Nielsen research shows the Quentin Tarantino actioner sold just 42.5% as many copies as the Warner comedy, which uses flashbacks to retrace the escapades of four buddies who went to Las Vegas for a bachelor party.

In rental stores, Inglorious Basterds didn’t fare much better, generating just 50.5% as many rentals as The Hangover.Disney’s G-Force, CG-animated film about a group of guinea pigs, voiced by Nicolas Cage and others, out to save the world, debuted at No. 4 on both the sales and rental charts.

Holdovers Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, from Warner, and Universal Studios’ Public Enemies held down the No. 3 spots on First Alert and Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, respectively, after debuting at No. 1 the previous week. Rental demand for Public Enemy was down just 17% from the film’s first week in stores.

The Hangover also was the No. 1 Blu-ray Disc seller for the week, according to Nielsen VideoScan research, with Inglorious Basterds bowing at No. 2. Even though it’s a comedy, The Hangover generated 24% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, another sign that the high-definition format is fast moving into the mainstream. Inglorious Basterds generated 33% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc.

30% for G-Force? Was that expected? That seems crazy high for a film that doesn't appear to be very appealing to adults.

Its crazy high for a non PS3 demographic title. Best ever Blu-ray unit marketshare for a family title.

Raise your hands if you expected for Blu-ray to set a record $86.09 M for this week and overall revenues for DVD + Blu-ray to be up 20% from the year before?

That's great. Hopefully that momentum will carry forward into Q1 2010. Thanks for the update Kosty.

I knew the number would be similar to last week... even without a Harry Potter. It's buying frenzy time.

G-force is big because SD DVD sales are low, I think. Plus incremental from the $10 coupon probably didn't hurt. Still impressive regardless of how it was achieved. I got the title for $5 from Target with the two coupons and price match plus I sent the SD DVD copy to some needy kids. There are two households watching those secret agent mini-pigs on that fin-ski.

First 2-4 weeks should be good for Blu-ray, I would think. $50M week 1, $40M week 2 is my guess. Better than that is very good news.
