Nah, even then they'd only lose about the same money per unit as Sony's PS3

Yeah but what company would want to lose a billion dollars a quarter just to try to force a format on consumers...oshi.../wave Sony.

Except that when both units launched they were both selling about $200 below cost (according to the same 3rd party site). Only the Toshiba has dropped in selling price since then, and the PS3 has a much greater chance of having cost reductions then the HD DVD player (because Sony manufactures their own componants and more of their PS3 componants were non-standardized).

So I would say that best case scenario would have Toshiba losing $400-$500 per player on that deal, although they would probably be selling the TV maybe $100 above cost (being generous). So net result would be $300-$400 loss I would expect.

Please provide a link to Toshiba's cost per player, as your entire post is under the assumption that you actually know it even though it's never been published.

I don't get these Toshiba is losing it's shirt post. Toshiba has reported operating profits in its CE division for the last five quarters (that is all I can find). The CE division does HD.

Sony on the other hand reported a 2 BILLION dollar loss on its game division.

So there is proof that Sony loses money on the PS3, but there is only assumption regarding Toshiba.

So either Toshiba is selling so much other stuff that it makes up the huge loss, or the loss isn't as great as some people would like to think.

"Demand for personal computers and digital consumer electronics products, like flat-panel televisions and portable digital music players, pushed up sales at its digital products division by 11 percent to 2.8 trillion, although sales of mobile phones fell due to poor results in the Japanese market. As a result the division was less profitable, with operating income dropping 5.1 percent to 15.8 billion."

So if there is one part that is hurting, it is their cell phone division, which is part of CE.

Random linky goodness. http://www.networkworld.com/news/200...ps.html?inform
