Default How are the studios doing?

How are the studios doing so far in 2007? Here comes a summary from BoxOfficeMojo of how the studios have done so far in 2007. This gives us a hint for the upcomming new releases on either format.

Code:

1	Sony / Columbia 21,40%
2	Paramount 20,30%
3	Buena Vista 15,10%
4	Warner Bros, 12,50%
5	20th Century Fox 7,80%
6	Universal 6,00%
7	New Line 2,90%
8	MGM/UA 2,20%
9	Lionsgate 2,10%
10	Fox Searchlight 1,80%
11	Miramax 1,20%
12	Rogue Pictures 1,10%

Studio Market Share 2007:
Blu-ray exclusive: 51,60%
Neutral: 35,70%
HD-DVD exclusive: 7,10%

Looks like Blu-ray will have a bright future. The exclusive support for HD-DVD is not so bright...

Merlins, that is great info. I have pointed this out a number of times, but be prepared for the typical HD DVD zealot response:
"Every movie in the theaters from a BD exclusive studio sucks...."

I have a feeling these "sucky movies" are going to propel Blu-Ray to a huge holiday lead.

Dont Forget MGM is part owned by Sony so unlikely to go neutral.

Great post... I actually thought about doing the amazon toshiba HD DVD deal. But then I came to my senses...and realized there's no point buying into a format that's gonna end up losing anyway.

That's a compelling breakdown. Of course, there are a few more big releases in the queue that will shift things up a bit. (e.g. WB's Harry Potter)

Thanks for the update.

The meaning of the numbers behind this post is the strongest argument against all hd dvd fantasty threads.

Content is king: especially when that is the reason you buy an Hd player in the first place - to watch content.

At the moment FOX and Disney are not releasing anything, so unless, they get their shit togethere, that boxoffice lead means nothing.

But ofcause Blu-ray would get a good sale this holiday season - but that dosn't really mean anything to me, since I think it has been a pretty bad year so far. POTC3 sucked, SM3 sucked. Actually I only saw three movies at the cinema, so far, that I wanna own, 'Little Children' (New Line), 'Zodiac' (Paramount) and '300' (Warner), so I'm really not missing out on anything so far - and you can say what you want, but it should be clear to everyone, that HD DVD got better catalog releases coming out than Blu-ray.

Yes, Fox is absent, but Disney has been releasing quite a few blockbusters and strong sellers recently (POTC 1+2, Apocolypto, Deja Vu). They have Bridge to Terebetha and Wild Hogs coming soon. Yes, they are not exactly cranking them out, but they definitely have a presence. And I had a feeling you were going to mention that everything from a BD exclusive studio sucks but the studios that support HD DVD are great.

No NO mate - i'm not against Blu-ray at all. In fact, I'm just waiting for Pioneer to release their pc-drive, so that I can go neutral - but I do honestly feel that I get more good movies from the HD DVD camp at the moment, but thats my taste. I haven't seen 'Bridge to Terebetha' and 'Wild Hogs' since thay are not released in Denmark yet. But I think you forgot to notice that I'm more interrested in Catalog releases than Day-and-date, since there are so many good Movies that I wanna own i HD, and I do believe that In a yaer, there will max be 10 new films I'm interrested in. But I no that catalog releases will not win the war - but I don't really care about the war, as little as I care about boxoffice numbers.
