Default Time Warner CEO: DVD Sales Trends Improved In 1Q

Quote:
Jeff Bewkes, chief executive of Time Warner Inc. (TWX), said Monday that the decline in the DVD sales market in the first quarter is milder than the drop-off suffered in the fourth quarter of last year.

At an investor conference in Florida, Bewkes said the DVD sales market is down 4% so far in the first quarter following a 10% drop in the previous quarter.

"That's an improvement," said Bewkes.

Bewkes said the retail market for DVDs is in secular decline amid the rise of digital media distribution, but emerging technologies like Blu-ray are growing. He also said it's unclear how much the recent deterioration in the DVD business is permanent amid the effects of the global financial crisis and the slowdown in consumer spending.

"It's not time to rush for the exits," he said.

Bewkes noted that box-office film revenue are performing well so far this year despite the economic downturn.

"Entertainment can hold up - and has traditionally quite well - in a recession, and it seems to be this time," said Bewkes.

You're damn right Blu-ray is emerging and growing to replace DVD as DVD fades and shrinks!

Yeah, to say Blu-ray is growing is something a 2-year old could deduce.

Blu-ray is an emerging technology? Is it not in year 3? A little late to be called "emerging", IMO.

I've also read that in the auto industry there is a newly emerging technology they are calling an "internal combustion engine." Saints be praised, will wonders never cease?

I don't know about that. New DVD releases still out number BD 100-1.
I'll believe it when I see it.

Thats a silly statement.

Do you coexistence with reality on occasion?

Even if you add up non studio content you can't find a number anywhere close to that and all the major studios are committing to day and date of all major DVD releases on Blu-ray soon.

Over 1400 Blu-ray titles available now, its silly to say that there have been 100 x DVD titles in the same period.

Meh.....
