Default Has anyone noticed Blu-Ray taking off post-Christmas?

I work for BOTH Blockbuster AND Best Buy (Home Theater Department),
and I've also always been a fan of HD content.
I owned both the Toshiba HD-DVD A2 and the PS3
for Blu-Ray and have been very happy with both,
though I'll admit I sold my HD-DVD player back in March.

At Blockbuster:
Over the past few months we've seen slow but steady
rental and sales growth for the Blu-Ray format since
the "death" of HD-DVD in February.
However, when the month of December arrived,
Blu-Ray practically exploded at our store.
We're averaging about 20-30% of all rental transactions on Blu-Ray
since Christmas day, and we are checked out of all new releases on Blu.
We've even gone from selling about 5-6 titles on Blu PER WEEK in
October to about 5-6 per day post Christmas.
We even ran out of all 34 copies of Dark Knight on December 9th...
and we sold nearly 60 copies through the Holidays.

But that's not all...
At Best Buy:
we are out of stock of the following Blu-Ray players this week...
Panasonic's BD-35
Sony's S350
Sony's S550
Samsung 2550
Samsung 1500
And both Insignia Players!
In short...I have nothing to sell, and none of the players
are really even at a low sale price, they are almost all full price!
And it's not because stock is low....it's because people keep buying everything we have!
We are now in the process of expanding the Blu-Ray section in Media because we keep selling a lot more of the titles now as well.

I put this in the Smackdown thread because
I'm sure this isn't the case everywhere, but
I'm just wondering what everyone else is experiencing...
Does anyone else here work retail, or know someone who does?
Or have you had a recent shopping experience with players or movies
and noticed a change?

HAVE YOU NOTICED BLU-RAY GROWTH WHERE YOU LIVE?

No offense to you but at least at my blockbuster the blu ray titles for sale are outrageously priced.

The rental section has gone from 1 bay to 2 and it looks like it might start to creep into a 3rd bay.

I couldn't agree more! But unfortunately, the prices are corporate set, and I have no say in the matter.

I will say though, Blockbuster pricing has changed
on a lot of the titles after 12/25. I did the reprice myself...
A large chunk of our Sony titles are on sale for $17.99 right now,
(Fifth Element, Men in Black, Patriot)
and a large chunk of Warner/New Line
catalog titles are $14.99 or $19.99 respectively.
(Pan's Labyrinth, Shining, Body Heat, Fugitive)
Also post-Christmas all Blu-Rays that are normally
$34.99 ring up $29.99 at the register with a $5 off coupon that are posted
at each register.
It's a promotion Blockbuster is trying...but the sticker prices still say $34.99.
I know it's not great, but it's still better than what we'd
previously been charging. (And often better than paying regular prices at Best Buy.)

We even experimented with $24.99 new release pricing on Get Smart and Speed Racer.
It seemed to go over really well...but again, like I said...it's a corporate decision, and I don't support what I see as the overpricing of Blu-Ray software at either store. I prefer Amazon.com for all my purchase needs. Often times, it is still cheaper than my employee discount, simply because it eliminates the middle-man.

I voted players, not movies are moving, and that's what I'm noticing locally. Nobody in their right mind would pay 29.99 for Blu-ray movies.

There are quite a few people not in their right mind, there are a variety of methods to demonstrate this. Sticking to your assertion, I've noticed that "new" releases in blu seem to move nicely at either of the Best Buys I frequent. I won't pay 29.99 for an individual title, only because I'm cheap. Not everyone is as cheap as I am.

I haven't noticed any difference, other than I've started buying discs, and so have a few of my friends. I'm assuming, based on that anecdotal evidence that movies are selling more. I know people who own blu ray discs, yet nothing to play them on.

I have seen alot more people in blu ray bays at stores. As for pricing I do not buy anything above the 19.99 price point and have no problems buying used. I have bought alot of titles off this site lately and am happy to continue to do so.

Thanks for getting rid of the Joker face on the avatar, I missed the old soldiers face.
I voted yes, I have noticed a huge difference in Blu missing from the shelves at Target after Christmas. They were full before. Great sign, but this is just from one persons observation, don't rip me a new one anti Blu people, I don't have a link to back this up.

I have definitely noticed an upswing in Blu-ray sales. There are more people browsing the titles now than I've seen before, and my Best Buy has been expanding their space for Blu-rays too.

I would've put "No Difference At All" because the after Christmas sales drop is coming (especially in this economy).

Why not pay 29.99 for a movie? Millions of people did when DVD came out. Of course over time the studios sold more movies when it was 19.99 D&D release.
