Default Blu Ray overtakes DVD in Japan

Blu-ray players have overtaken the popularity of their DVD counterparts for the first time ever in Japan, during the first week of November, according to data collected by GfK Retail and Technology.

The region saw Blu-ray recorders occupy more than 50 per cent of the market share for DVD recorders, in terms of unit numbers, a significant increase from 10 per cent, recorded October 2007.

Gfk also reports that Blu-ray machines are replacing DVD recorders 1.5 times faster than the latter replaced VHS machines. DVD recorders exceeded 50 per cent after 82 weeks. In comparison, Blu-ray recorders achieved the same results in only 53 weeks

Just returned from tokyo, and the BD recorders had prominent displays in the main walkways of the big chains, the number of new models and new participants have incresed. Where it used to be just Panasonic and Sony, and some Sharp, we now see pioneer and mitsubishi selling BD recorders. Toshiba had their own HDD based recorders but surrounded by BD recorders, their prices are signficantly lower yet they appear to be outsold by everyone else except for the new entries.

Usually, in Japan, the prominent displays are reserved in the main floor for the best selling devices, and BD recorders have been there since about 18 months ago.

The BD-R and RE blanks have also seen some visible growth. Their display area is growing (in the main floor, the PC media section, the dedicated electronics floor). I now see cakebox of 20 disks, 20unit boxsets of both BD-R and BD-RE. Printable media is also available.

There also new brands and new packaging not there 2 months ago, and rack space has grown --- there are now also racks of individual brands next to the recorder displays (Sony for sony, Panasonic for panasonic, TDK for sharp).

In units of 20/box, the BD-R sells for 8000yen, BD-RE sells for 9000yen.

Given the Yen appreciation, that's 90yen/USD, so we're talking about $4.50 for blank media.

In the Japanese market, what HD content can you record onto BD discs with these recorders? All Over-the-air HD content? Anything else?
