Default Is the PS3 the best Blu-ray player?

Seems after a few tests - the answer would seem to point towards a very sturdy, yes!

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=2138

If anyone is looking for a new blu-ray player this X-Mas, you will be hard-pressed to find a better, more reliable machine.

Unless you are one of those people who have the "I will never have a game console as my BD player" mentality (which is like passing on buying the faster car because it is a hybrid ), then you may want to consider the PS3 when looking to purchase a BD player.

But do your research, there are other issues that may sway you away from the PS3 (blutooth remote, HDMI only for lossless sound, etc.).

But there aren't any other BD's on the market that have wi-fi streaming for movies and music, have music visualizers, can browse the internet, play AVI/Mpeg movies, photos, have a minimum 40 gigs of hard-drive space, can play hi-def games, etc. etc. etc.

I thought it was nice to finally see a test like this done.

(For anyone looking at a player that is totally against the PS3 for some reason - the LG looks to be a solid second choice.)

Cheers everyone,

Yep. Others are closer and now cheaper, but if you have a HDMI connection and don't need 5.1 analog outs for your AVR, the PS3 is still the stellar Blu-ray player for $399.

Especially since its the studio reference player and gives a pure 1080p24 Blu-ray output to your display.

If you take money into account then no not really... For a small sacrafice of performance you can get a pannasonic bd-35 for half the price, or a sony S350. The BD-p1500 isn't all that bad either though it doesn't handle bad jar files as well as the PS3 or the first two player I mentioned.

Yes, still the best player despite its limitations. It probably will always be this way.

Well, to be fair, the higher price on the PS3 does include "extra" capabilities. It's not like it's a higher price for the same exact features.

However, not everyone cares to own a PS3 (usually because of some strange bias against the company, etc.) - that is why I felt this thread was helpful for those who may be looking to own their first BD player (and kind of a fun smackdown for all those who knocked the PS3 as BD player against stand alones).

There are a number of articles and test reports stating the new Panasonic DMP-BD55 is the best blu-ray player available at this point.

Many people just want a bluray player in the sense that many people just want a DVD player rather than an x-box 360, ps3, x-box or ps2. Also, it's extrodenarly hard to ignore the fact that these high quality SALs weigh in at half the price of a PS3, particularly for the vast majority of customers that first of all aren't even aware of the extra capabilities of the PS3 (besides games) and wouldn't even know where to begin with taking advantage of them even if they knew the features existed.
