Default Is it possible that HD DVD's can be played on Blu-ray players via firmware update?

I already know they can't right now, but since it's over for HD DVD and all those movies out there are going to be trashed? That sucks for the environment and that's just a waste.

Can blu-ray lasers by some chance (via firmware update or something) play HD DVDs?

I read somewhere that HD DVDs laser is fatter than Blu-ray and thinner than DVD. Blu-ray can read DVD which is on the other end of the laser size spectrum (also color difference, but does that really matter?) In an uneducated guess it would seem possible that blu-ray lasers can scale to the size of HD DVDs size?

no,

the focusing distance on the discs is different, without a lens change it would be impossible.

Amir had thought it may be possible for the PS3 to do this but again it had to do with focusing and no one has really looked into it.

If it was that simple don't you think we'd see more dual players?

What about the totally different software needed? How would they handle picture in picture given that most blu-ray players can't do this on blu-ray disks.

Best hope is some kind of trade on deal.

On a smaller scale, I wonder if they could make an upgrade to the PS3 that'll let it run the Xbox add-on.

They could, but what possible benefit would it provide them or their customers? Anybody with an HD-DVD disc will have a player already - those without a player are not going to buy the add-on now and buy HD-DVD discs, they'll just wait for the BD releases.
