Question why not have just 1 format?

When HD & BD was 1st started why didnt they deside on 1 format (HB DVD)

having the space
hd 15 for the movie with no extras
BD 25 (HD 30) for longer movies or with some extras
BD 50 (HD 51) for the 2 DVD SE. like clockwork on 1 DVD

have region free like HD, but have region coding like BD as an option but it would be only an option from company to company the non regioned DVD would have NRC type logo or no logo would be on the DVD case/back cover.

the box (case) would either be for rating, genera or company (like disney who is the only company that actually has white cases.) or would complement the art work like HEVYMETAL or HHGttG with a metalic blue or silver. for the case or SAW moves (box set) being an absolutly clear case. AVN & horror would be in a nontranclucent black case.

& finally yhere wouldnt be any comfusion on 2 totally contridicting formats

They did desire that.. if HD hadn't pushed the start date to beat BD out of the gate or if BD weren't too prideful they may have had it also.

There were some compromises both camps weren't willing to make. Toshiba insisted on disks that could be made with existing DVD lines, where the BDA insisted on having bigger disks...Toshiba was in bed with Microsoft as far as HDi and such, and the BDA weren't willing to sacrifice the potential power of BD-Java because they felt that HDi was too limited...etc.
