Exclamation The battles are in the US - Best Buy

Well... Best Buy's weekly specials have been posted and well... it seems both sides are playing hard ball.

BDA

HARDWARE:
For Sony, Spiderman 3/Ratchet & Clank/Cars/Ratatouille are plastered on EVERY TV screen being sold.

Sony is pretty much GIVING AWAY a Playstion 3 with a purchase of their BRAVIA 1080p HDTV.

Samsung is stepping up with their BD-P1400 1080p Blu-Ray for $499.99 which will get 7 FREE Blu-Ray movies (5 by mail + 2 instantly). Note freebie seems to be all WB discs. If you buy their 40" 1080p HDTV, you get $500 OFF which pretty much gives you the Blu-Ray player for FREE.

Blu-Ray Movies: Blazing Saddle, The Corpse Bride, Troy: Director's Cut, Training Day (once again ALL WB)... are on sale for $24.99.

Ratatouille, Cars, Pixar Short Film Collection, Meet the Robinsons are all $29.99 but you can save $10 when you buy any two.

Apocalypto for $19.99. Remember the Titans for $17.99.

WB Blu-Ray movies - Full Metal Jacket, SwordFish, Unforgiven, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Alexander Revisited are all $17.99.

HD-DVD

HARDWARE:

Toshiba has a small ad with GET 8 FREE HD DVD Movies (5 by mail + 3 instantly) with any HD DVD Player or SAVE $200 if you buy a Toshiba 42" HDTV & up. The model is the Toshiba HD-A3 though and it's going for $299.99 (they mention this as a 1080i HD DVD Player).

HD-DVD Movies: Evan Almighty & Knocked up for $19.99.

WB HD-DVD movies (exactly the same as Blu-Ray) - Full Metal Jacket, SwordFish, Unforgiven, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Alexander Revisited are all $17.99.

Universal movies - 12 Monkeys, Backdraft, Doom, Big Lebwki, Casino, Seabiscuit are all for $17.99

--
So you can see all the studios are getting into the action. WB is being REALLY FAIR by having promo for BOTH formats. I am sure they will be watching the sales numbers for them.

BDA has both SONY and SAMSUNG helping out on the hardware while TOSHIBA is going on their own. No crazy liquidation specials going on... it seems like it is a one time deal while supplies last. Now with the HD-DVD drives going to $299... it isn't quite the bargain any more.

So being a Blu-Ray supporter, this is the time to buy those X-mas present for your friend who has Blu-Ray. The main focus would be on the WB titles if you don't have it since those will have the most impact.

For those HD-DVD fans, this is the time where you can support your format as WB made it a pretty fair battle ground. There can be no more excuses if your format LOSES to Blu-Ray in software sales for WB movies after all those cheap HD-DVD players are sold.

Too bad for me that all this is happening only in the US.

Actually the smartest thing for the BDA to do right now is to include Blu players with tv's like the Bravia's, Viera's, and Aquos' and let the customer walk out with 1 or 2 Blu Ray movies of their choice out the door.

On the A3, while it's listed as $299 - due to early printing of the circular prior to the new price matching, it's $199 on the web site and in stores. Also the A3 comes with 300 and Bourne Identity packed inside, so that's 10 free discs.

Rayzor, I agree it's prudent business to give away hardware with the TV, even when Toshiba did it a few times over the summer. Yet I remember a few bashing topics, citing it was desperate move on their part. I know you're not saying it was, but that's always the thing I notice. Toshiba does something, it's desperate and when Sony does it, it's good business.

If Sony were to toss in the entire Spiderman trilogy for the PS3, i'd think that's getting desperate. The BDA companies aren't going to price down to $99 or even $199 anytime soon, so their best move is to bundle the player with the tv's, which would help absorb a bit of the cost as a bundle. As funny as this is going to sound, i've actually given the thought of maybe grabbin a HD DVD player when i go to the states in a week, and using it to replace my existing dvd player. Here i am, saying people shouldn't go purple, yet i might do it myself

Oh yeah, I think the TV + SA bundles are great. I wish I got a free Sony BD standalone with my Bravia purchase Rayzor, I recommend you do go purple. I am purple, it's great having both and contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be neutral to be purple lol. What province are you from?

300 and Bourne are included in the "3 free instantly" Best Buy deal so it is only 8... But it does not specify what the other 1 free instantly title is (probably customer choice of anything <$34.99)...

EDIT: Sorry Genosis but you are correct (forgot to set my clock back)... 5 free by mail, 3 free under $34.99 titles, and 2 in the box... For $199 that's as good a deal as Wal-Mart's $98 because you get 5 more movies...

That is incorrect; from the Best Buy website any three HD movies you place in your cart are $0

EDIT: as long as it is not a pre-released or boxset of course
