Post Stand alone numbers to sales numbers... Does not compute *UPDATED*

It's hard to get some numbers so I have to get them from various sources to hopefully get some solid numbers.

Here are some numbers.

PlayStation 2 - 39,100,000
Nintendo DS - 12,700,000
PSP - 8,300,000
Xbox 360 - 6,300,000
Wii - 4,000,000
PLAYSTATION 3 - 1,750,000

*Data from NDP Group

http://kotaku.com/gaming/excellent/n...rop-299759.php

HD-DVD Standalone - 60,000 (2006) + 90,000 (9 months x 10,000 per month) + = 150,000 aprox
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/04...r_sales_stats/

210,000 Xbox HD-DVD add-on sold (up to end of Sept 2007)
http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6497144.html

HD-DVD Standalone base (including Xbox 360 Add-on): 360,000 aprox.

Using 60% ratio of HD-DVD hardware advantage (30% blu-ray).
http://www.techspot.com/news/25658-h...ef-market.html
http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/st...4605296&EDATE=

Blu-Ray Standalone - 75,000 aprox (not counting PCs)

Transformer at 115k units sold a week covers pretty much 76% of the HD-DVD stand alone market. There isn't really much room to grow (yet it is still #1 this week). Most likely the mystery Xbox add-on figure people bought some too. So the Xbox add-on is having an effect. How much? We don't exactly know.

UPDATE: With the Xbox HD-DVD add-on numbers, Transformers would have around 32% attach rate with a HD-DVD owner (much more likely).

Also these 75,000 BD SA owners can beat HD-DVD Standalones sales? I would assume the attach rate for the SA BD buyers would be similar to those HD-DVD SA buyer (if not more since they paid more). Therefore the PS3 is definately having an effect since it would be almost impossible for them to beat HD-DVD sales by themselves.

So what does this all mean?

The standalone numbers mean NOTHING except for PR. The items not counted in (Xbox HD-DVD add-on and Sony PS3) ARE HAVING an effect to the total software sale.

Given that the PS3 sells approximately 130,600 units in August (without the $399 model) and HD-DVD regularily sell 10,000 a month. Even with a boost of 50,000 units more, it would be difficult to ofset the PS3 effect.

If there are errors with my numbers, please tell me but I think the conclusion should be the same.

I think your numbers are quite flawed. That 60k number for 2006 was "shipped." In the middle of the year when Toshiba claimed 55% lead, they said they were at something like 165,000 to BD's 135,000. More sales happened and Blu-ray overtook HD DVD by an unknown amount and then HD DVD took it back at 53%.

Lets put it this way, Sony will sell more Spiderman 3 trio box sets (3 blu-ray movies) on Blu-ray than Toshiba will sell players at their fire sale.

Think about that for a moment...

I like the "SOLID" numbers produced by your approximations. Due us all a a favor and keep your bias numbers to yourself. Thanks.

Be sure to tell that to all the HD DVD fanboys too. That way you're not a hypocrite.

BTW, there is no such thing as exact numbers in sales. Look at what Paramount tried to do with TF.

totally missing the point. Spidey 3 is one movie....irrelevant in the long run. Each toshiba player represents the capacity for a much much larger number of movies sold down the line

If you check the reference links, THAT is where the numbers were pulled from. The rest have to be calculated because they don't make it easy to get the final numbers. No BIAS there.

i thought he brought up good points. even if they were approximations it goes to show that the ps3 and xbox 360 communities are having an impact on disc sales. so often toshiba tries to play down both sides but the truth is that people are buying ps3's solely as movie players in some cases. i honestly can't think of why someone would buy a blu-ray standalone when they could have some gaming goodness as well!
