Default The Loser...

...has got to be the combo players. They're retailing for what, $700-800 right now and that's after a recent price cut from $1000+? Tomorrow, you could buy a HD DVD player and a PS3 at Wal-Mart for a combined $539 including taxes in my state (Texas @ 8.25%). So, $750ish vs. $539. Combo players are a big loser in all the price slashing going on from both sides. The prices are getting cheap enough that there's no reason for a combo player other than the convenience of having only one player, but when the price difference is that huge then the choice should be obvious for consumers.

Its a mistake for CE's to make combo players for the reason its a mistake to make HD-DVD players. Toshiba's for some reason thinks it has a shot and is doing everythign it can to eke out a tie.

Yeah, they definitely need to drop the price. Isn't the Samsung one that still hasn't been released scheduled for a MSRP of $999? Everyone praised it for having the best features of the combo players, but before it hits the market it's potentially a $400+ ripoff for consumers versus JUST the deal tomorrow. Imagine the Black Friday deals: $100 HD DVD players + $250 Blu-Ray players. Holy moly, that's awesome for consumers!

Remember when those combo players were spouted as the future by HD DVDers when their chips were down? Now, I guess purple is not an option. Red all the way! Y'all have a heck of a way of making friends.

I am glad Toshiba undercut them. Samsung and LG, have you learned your lesson? Support red and you'll get stabbed in the back.

I'm still buying the Samsung dual. I want one standalone player in my front room and I want be able to play any movie I like. HD is moving in the right direction but I think all the crowing is a little bit premature. If Walmart sells a 100,000 A2's this weekend and WB go HD exclusive, then I would think it would be time to put the champagne on ice.

Toshiba has priced the combo players out of the market. You can get an A3 and a 40GB PS3 with 13 movies for $600 tops. If you are lucky and score a $98 A2, then you are all set for $500 with 11 movies.
