Default Sony's answer to the 99 HD DVD player...no price cut on the PS3

Sony: $399 Blu-ray Player; That's All, Folks
Company executive dismisses calls for lower prices.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (November 1, 2007) -- Sony Electronics President Stan Glasgow says Blu-ray player prices will likely not fall under $399 this holiday season.

“(The player will be) in the $399 range...I don’t expect it to go much lower than that," Glasgow said today, according to TWICE Magazine.

Glasgow made his comment today following an announcement from Wal-Mart that it will sell the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for $98 as a special pre "Black Friday" sale starting tomorrow.

Blu-ray and HD DVD are rival formats competing for the new high-def disc audience.

Amazon.com, Circuit City and Wal-Mart revealed late last month that they would sell the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player for $198 during non-promotional periods.

At $198, the entry-level HD DVD player is now $300 less than the lowest-priced Blu-ray player, the Sony BDP-S300.

But Glasgow, whose company is the leading booster of the Blu-ray format, seemed unworried about the lower HD DVD prices.

He said consumers will choose Blu-ray over its high-def disc rival because there are more Blu-ray titles. Additionally, the Sony executive said Blu-ray outperforms HD DVD.

“Hopefully when all the (movie) titles reach the market this season and the beginning of 2008, (consumers) will see the (difference) in performance," Glasgow said, according to TWICE.

not surprising. PS3 has had it's price cut, and now so has HD-DVD.
may the best man win.

Those could either be the man's famous last words, or an obligatory bluff in advance of the BDA's impending response to the fire sale. You decide.

Um, call me crazy, but at $399, the new PS3 is the lowest priced bluray player, and that's only $201 more then the entry Hd player.

Well the A2 is as of now 300 dollars less than the PS3.

However, I will say that the PS3 was certainly not going to get a price drop, and once the data is examined from the after math of these sales, Sony will probably have to consider dropping the price of the S300 to at least 249 or less.

good god, if they drop that thing anymore...especially after saying they won't.
going off their history a price cut is due in probably a month...
1) say no price cut is coming.
2) new skus come out/say no new skus are coming
3) rumors/put down rumors
4) pics of new price/be silent
5) New price.

Sony also said no price cut after the $499 PS3's sold out. No one ever announces a sale beforehand.

Sony is just releasing the $399 price-cut I imagine it will be a while before we see a new one - only Toshiba seems to think it necessary to drop the price almost daily.
