Default 4% gain since August

At the DisplaySearch conference held yesterday, attendees were treated to the latest information regarding the format war. Warner announced that '300' has sold over 250,000 copies on Blu-ray since it was released in July, twice as many as has sold on HD DVD. Sony also announced that the PS3 would soon be receiving a firmware upgrade to boost its Blu-ray interactivity functions.

On the whole, HD players have increased their market share, now at 5%, since August when it was only 1.3% of total DVD player sales. Additionally, HD players accounted for 27% of the revenue in the DVD player market. This trend is expected to continue through the upcoming holiday season.

A 4% market gain since August is really impressive.

I think the author wrote that wrong because in another part it says
Quote:
Between April 2006 and August 2007, next-gen set-tops totaled just 1.3% of the overall DVD player market.
which to me means 1.3% was the average market share for the entire 16 month period going back to HD DVD launch. Undoubtedly August alone was much higher than 1.3%. It's amazing the spin that can be put on data simply by subtle time grouping.

For more in-depth analysis of those data, see this thread.

Summary:

400,000 HDM standalone players sold since inception to Aug 07.
Current HDM standalone player sales at about 100K/month.

But it didn't say it was the average market share. It said the market share. I have read other reports where the market share was listed as equally dismal. That's why a market share of 5% now is impressive.

It also said: "On a revenue basis, next-gen players carved out a 27% share of the overall market during the month of August. That marks a rise from next-genís 11% share between April 2006 and August 2007." Again, it doesn't say average.

I think people are starting to notice these formats. They are mentioned regularly in TV ads and they are prominantly displayed on 2-3 endcaps in all Best Buys.

This holiday season should start showing a tidal wave of advertising and promotions to get people even more involved.

Interesting. So Toshiba isn't likely to come even close to their multiple time revised predictions of selling 1 million units by the end of 2007.

I agree! These are going to be some very exciting times for HDM. I'm also starting to notice that people who I wouldn't consider HD enthusiasts are taking notice also and asking alot of questions about both formats.

I don't believe they said 1 million standalone players. This one article I have says "players and recorders" so I assume PC drives are counted as well if not 360 Add-ons.

http://www.tvpredictions.com/toshibaforecast061207.htm

They will be on track for 500,000 standalones, 250-300,000 Xbox Add ons and who knows how many PC drives.

Add-ons are not Toshiba products. They are not counted.

This isn't that surprising; SD DVDs are saturated in the market so HDs under the worse of chances should at some point get a larger market share. But they are getting more visibility, Target ,Best Buy, Circuit City, even Blockbuster Video. Even if they are only advertising Blu-Ray, it should increase the sales for both.
