Default Good News/Bad News for Blu-Ray (If this guy is telling the truth)

http://wesleytech.com/samsung-bdp-24...-canceled/380/

Bad news - Samsung cancels new BD Player:
Quote:
If you were looking forward to get the new Samsung BDP-2400, I have bad news for you; I just received word that Samsung has canceled all plans to release their upcoming high-end Blu-ray Disc player. All orders for the player have been canceled, and the model will not be brought to the market.
Good News - Samsung delays dual format player to December for 1.1/2.0 specs:
Quote:
The Samsung BD-UP5000 has been moved back to December. The BD-UP5000 is a dual-format player and with this new release date means it is a minimum 1.1 spec, but it has all the required hardware to be a 2.0 spec. This may confirm my assumption that the BDP-2400 was canceled because they couldn’t meet the Oct. 31 deadline.
The good news is good in that it would mean, if the guy is right, that the 1.1/2.0 specs must just about be ready to come out.

I would also say this thread should be retitled good news for HD DVD *AND* blu-ray, as it sounds like both sides will be getting a fantastic player in the BD-UP5000.

Once Samsung can get the price down, I can see them flying off the shelves and nobody will have any excuse not to be simply a hi-def movie fan instead of a red or blue fan.

In Japan I think they just brought out 3-4 BD players.

This to me says the following:

"Samsung changes plans to heavily cut HiDef player sales in Q4 2007"

Sorry, but the dual format playing market is just not big enough, nor can prices be low enough, the generate demand worthy of dropping single format players for a brand.

Did Samsung actually say they're making it a 1.1 spec or the author interpreted it because of the new date? I believe that the 1.1 mandate is when the player is "introduced" to the market, which could be announced, shipped, street date, etc, we're not really sure what. Not saying will or won't, just that there shouldn't be assumptions made at this point.

Interesting... I wonder if they figured a 1.1 profile BD player wouldn't be significantly less expensive than the dual player, so they ditched the BD only option and just went dual all the way? That would be a nice twist.

I think the October 31 mandate is based on when the player is certified--in other words, when it receives the Blu-ray logo.

Might have that already, we'll see I guess.

I'd say there's an equally "bad news" for HD-DVD in this: with one of the only HD-DVD -authorized dual-format players being delayed until December, that's one less machine to sell to the deep-pocketed adopters 'on the fence'. That leaves only LG's to-be-released 2nd gen dual format device capable of handling true HD-DVD playback available for the holiday. (I'm presuming "December" launch of the Samsung won't really provide much store-shelf display time, especially if it launches late like the Toshiba A2 did last year.
