Forget everything you know about hi-def formats. Clear your mind.... Seriously clear your mind.

Ready?

Ok. Now I'm going to throw two words at you. Based on these words, which do you think sounds cooler? Which one would you rather have rolling off your tongue a dozen times a week 3 years from now:

HD-DVD
Blu-ray

Two slick syllables versus a five-syllable acronym? If I had to pick one of the two to name my kid I know which I'd prefer. Yeah baby, smack that!

Damn, that's brilliant.

I'm off to go sell my HD-DVD's now. Talk to everyone later.

Here's what I think when I clear my mind

HD-DVD - what does HD mean?
Blu-Ray - Who blew Ray?

One sounds like a video format

the other sounds like the Blue Man group doing a Ray Charles tribute

Many stores use the name "Blu-Ray DVD" to get the customer to understand that it's a video disc. That's a smart plan and eventually, everyone will know Blu-Ray is a disc and the DVD moniker will be thrown away.
Without the DVD part, HDDVD has only "HD" which is used to describe everything these days, I wouldn't be surprised if we get mountain-dew HD or doritos HD soon

And why does Ray get all the action?

But lasers are cool, especially if they're attached to sharks' heads.

Blu-ray just sounds like Steve Irwin's nightmare. HD DVD is to the point. I get it.
