Default Frys Electronics has LG HD DVD / Blu Ray Combo players for $599!

I was at my local Frys yesterday, a saw that they had the LG Super Multi Blue player was price dropped to $599.

At this price, why would JSP even consider getting a standalone BRD player?

Isn't that the player with virtually no HD DVD capability other than playback?

Yep. That's the one.

I may get a combo player, but I'll wait for one with full support for each format.

That'll be a clearence sale probably... the unit is discontinued, with the new unit coming out fairly soon.

It's the same way I got my Sony BD-RE drive for <$200 CAD

It does support 2 channel TrueHD (HD DVD) and actually plays HD DVD movies. The only thing I wish it had for HD DVD is 5.1 TrueHD (which is not mandated by the HD DVD spec). It's also a pretty good Blu-ray player with 5.1 analog outputs for 5.1 TrueHD (Blu-ray) and uncompressed PCM playback. It's replacement evidently only has 2-channel analog output which is a killer for anyone not using HDMI receivers in their systems and wants lossless audio.

I remember reading that the load times on this player were ridiculously slow (much slower than even G1 players). Hopefully they fixed that with a firmware update. I suspect the prices on these players will hit $499 in order to clear the rest out. Not great, but not too bad if somebody is really worried about picking a side.
