Default Microsoft cuts Xbox HD DVD player to $179

FYI: From CNET
"Microsoft said on Thursday it would lower the price of the high-definition DVD player accessory for its Xbox 360 game console in the United States to $179 from $199, and add five free movies to anyone who buys the machine in August or September."

This is good news for HD DVD. But seriously, they should have dropped it even more. Drop the 360 by 100, plus 50 off the HD DVD, and you would be at 500 bucks. Same price as the soon to be extinct PS3 60gig.

Another tepid move by Microsoft.

Agreed. I'm closer to being insulted by this rather than pleased. You would think Micro$oft would know how to be competitive...

I agree, $20 is silly. Barely deserves a press release.

Good news how exactly?

If Xbox fans aren't buying it at 199, what makes you think that a 20 buck price drop will have people purchasing them in droves?

If Microsoft were as about customer choice as they claim, they'd release a Blu-Ray player and let the chips fall where they may.

And before you start with the typical HD-DVD fanboy drivel of "Sony's not giving choice and neither are Blu-Ray exclusive studios" they never made that claim, they're just updating to a new format, Microsoft spouted off nonsense that they were all about choice.

Only a completely blind and ignorant fan boy would even remotely suggest this isn't good news for HD DVD.

Now, I agree I'd like to see a BR add on for the 360. And as long as it can be succesfully integrated with the HD add on (HD add on adds USB ports). It could be the cheapest dual player on the market.
