Default DEG 2011 Year End Report

Press release

Consumer spending chart

Interestingly it's dated 10th Jan, and has appeared immediately after the Netflix 2011 report, as I've said previously I doubt that's a coincidence.

They've split the blurb and table out this year. Controvertially, there's no break-out of DVD/Blu-Ray revenues in either the table or report, only mention of Blu-Ray revenues is the 20% increase and "hit $2 billion". There's also no mention of Q4 in the tables, just "half-year" figures, I think what they've put up may not be complete.

Not much there we hadn't gleaned from the earlier data I think, though the downward revision of EST for 2010 from $680 million to $510 million is more than even I thought, 2011 revenue basically got revised back to 2010 levels. Personally I think the DEG has little grasp of EST, IHS have a much longer track record of reporting on it, and claim to get their data direct from all the major EST suppliers. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the DEG's EST data revised down further until it meets IHS.

Kiosk exceeded B&M renting. Not exactly a shock there... maybe its a surprise it took this long.

The number of BD playback devices sold in Q4 2011 is the same as was sold in Q4 2010 = 6 million.

Actually both the CEA and NPD have more Blu-ray players sold in 4Q 2011 than 4Q 2010.

The difference might be less PS3s sold in the periods being compared or rounding up in 2010 and rounding down in the 2011 numbers from DEG.

You have some links for that info? You already have all the necessary DEG links right?

It was in the annual joint presentation that NPD and CEA gave at CES. Things like that do not usually have links as the slides they used were marked proprietary data. I asked for a copy of their presentations but I do not see it in my email yet.

I'll try and look for any links but it was in the presentation that Shawn DuBravac CFA the Chief Economist analyst from the CEA and Stephen Baker the Vice President, Industry Analysis of NPD gave discussing the 4Q 2010 results.

They both said 4Q 2010 sales of large HDTVs and Blu-ray players exceeded expectations. Based on the CEA industry shipment based data and the NPDs point of sales data they both stated that Blu-ray's 4Q 2011 set top sales were higher than last year's.
