Default 4K2K Ultra Definition Blu-ray expected in 2013

Quote:
The world can look forward to super high definition movies at home in 2013 if the expectations of LG and its vice president of*Public Affairs and Communications at LG Electronics USA are to be met.

At the LG press conference, on the unveiling of the 84-inch 3D Ultra Definition TV, Pocket-lint quizzed John Taylor as to why the company was set to release a 4K2K set in the US, a place which currently benefits from no such resolution broadcasts at the present time.

"Well, firstly, our 3D UD TV can upgrade 1080p signals to a 4K2K output but we're also expecting the arrival of 4K Blu-rays in 2013," he exclusively revealed.

Should this indeed happen as promised, we can look forward to the same technology coming to the UK at the same time with a raft of Ultra Definition TV sets ready to meet it.

UPDATE: It's official. Not only has LG hinted at 4K2K Blu-rays, but Sony has announced a 4K2K Blu-ray player at its CES press conference in Las Vegas. Guess we'll all have to upgrade our TVs again after all.

That sure as heck is going to cause confusion to the consumers. They are gonna wonder if their blu-rays are worthless and outdated. Seems like blu-ray was just yesterday.

Good for us videophiles. Not good for the consumer that just bought a new hdtv.

Kind of inevitable. They were going this direction when the format war was heating up the only real question as if Blu would be the base of it or HD.

I do think Converters will be an issue because given the higher 1080p picture quality it might be a big factor this time around, although unless the picture really pops I don't know how they will move this standard forward unless the get congress to write it into law for them again.

I agree us videophiles will love it, average buyers, might not buy into it unless there is no choice.

Sony has announced a BD player that will upscale to 4K called the BDP-S790. But they have said nothing about a 4K BD in any of their press releases.

I can't wait to see what this looks like. At this point I expect diminishing returns. This will end up being even more niche.

It's nice for the studios. Gives them another pallet to us if they so choose.

It's nice to see that the industry is at least looking at improvement, versus taking two or three steps back just for convenience.
