Default Buying HD DVD movies on release date

Every week on Tuesday I would stop by Best Buy to check out the new releases of DVDs. The Best Buy was right next to my office building so it was not out of my way. It did not take long for me to collect over 500 DVDs over the years.
Now I have my HD-DVD player and have started the same ritual. Only problem is my local Best Buy does not get the latest release when it comes out on HD-DVD. I have asked the store manager. I have checked their computer, but no one can give me an answer why a big company like Best Buy cannot get the new HD-DVD releases on time.
This last week I did a test. I order 4 new releases on HD-DVD from Amazon. I preordered them and asked for next day shipping.
Tuesday I got an email saying they had shipped and Wednesday they show up at my doorstep.
On Wednesday I go to Best Buy to check if they have the new ones I have already ordered. Of course they do not. Their website even shows they are out of stock.
What gives??
I hope to send an email to Best Buys Corporate office and ask these questions.
For now I am just hoping that HD-DVD does not die because the movies are not distributed. Getting made was supposed to be the hard part, but right now if no one sees them on the shelf, no one will want to get HD DVD at all.

Just as a side question. Does Blu-Ray have this problem at Best Buy?

Blu-ray does have the same problem.
I went in on Tuesday to see the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions of Sopranos Season 6 pt1 and they didn't have either format.
It's still brqand new for these formats though - give them another 6 months or so and they'll be on the ball as the sections both begin to get bigger and bigger. I think both sides' supporters will have lots of announcements for 2007.

It is normally only the Warner titles.... All other studios seem to get their stuff to BB on time....

We have the same issue here in Florida....

I don't bother with BB anymore. Strictly Amazon. I love the pre-order system and great discounts.

In terms of distribution there is an extra layer or two added before it gets to retail stores. In Canada, most video titles are purchased by an intermediary distributer Video One who purchases the titles (I would assume) from the vendors. Retailers prefer this method rather than dealing with each individual studio. Some retailers have different clauses for contracts where they either have an internal buyer manage the titles, or the allow the vendors to manage the titles and give them X amount of dollars to buy the videos and Y percent profit on the sales.

Companies like Best Buy will ship titles to their warehouse then break packs and reship out to the stores. Amazon would buy directly from the distributors and would get the products to their warehouse (where they sell them) at the same time other retails get them to their warehouses or re-distribution centres (where they ship to the stores).

The main problem is that they are only getting in like 3-5 copies of each title. My Best Buy gets every single new release and gets them on release day and they sell out within hours because you have alot fo HD-DVD getting there on teudsay morning to make sure they get a copy. It actually been happening more and more recently and its now gotten to the point where its hard to get a new release at Best Buy but again this is due to them selling out, not because they didnt get any copies in to begin with.

If your Best Buy isnt getting them in at all then I dont know what to say besides you have a lousy Best Buy by you. If they are getting them in and selling out then its just a matter of having to order more than just 3-5 copies as the format has grown beyond that number being enough. That is the case with my Best Buy and I have requested to them on a couple of ocasions that they increase thier orders for HD-DVD to like 8-10 copies. They havent done it yet and its why I get 90% of my titles from Amazon. Hell, Amazon is much cheper anyways so its best to just stick with them
for the majority of your purchases.

OC..

My BB on Tuesday had The Sopranos and Fearless in but they didn't have Casino which I thought was odd. Even today, they still don't have it in.

Same problem here... I checked Bestbuy on Tuesday and Wednesday and they didn't have Casino, the only new release I noticed was Jet Li.

Either they are not ordering them or once they sell out they aren't re-ordering them because I haven't seen Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, or Any Bully in stock and they have been out for weeks.

My best buy was the opposite, lots of Casino's no Fearless's. And the only Soprano's was at Wal-mart.

Casino was shipped late by Universal to several locations, it's not just a Best Buy issue. We received our copies late on Tuesday because Universal just couldn't make enough on time. Best Buy's biggest issue is that they don't put the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray titles out on the shelves on time because they don't know if they should be on shelves yet or not. Usually if you ask they have them but they are in the back on the release date. Either they put the titles out early or late, there is no right on time with Best Buy.

Your best bet is to go with an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray specialist site if you want the title on release.
