Will Blu-ray software revenue (2011) be higher than VHS software revenue (2004)?

An interesting and fun comparison.

Will Blu-ray software revenue in 2011 be higher than VHS software revenue was in 2004?

I don't even remember VHS in 2004, but it was still doing pretty good on the revenue side. It had just lost an astounding $2.5 Billion in revenue from 2003, but no one really cared as DVD had gained $3.6 Billion in revenue during the same period.

So what do you think? Can Blu-ray in 2011 be bigger than VHS was in 2004?

VHS's revenue (S & R) for 2004 was $3.3B according to DEG:

So you are asking can BD do $1B more in 2011 then it did in 2010 ($2.3B)

Sure - that is definitely doable.

Those numbers have been restated by the DEG:

DVD is now stated as $16.7 Billion and VHS is stated at $4.4 Billion.

Nope - notice that the VHS also includes UMD

My link from 2005 does not include UMD.

You specifically said VHS revenues in your poll:

Will Blu-ray software revenue (2011) be higher than VHS software revenue (2004)?

So you are asserting that UMD movies (which released in mid-2005) generated $1.1 Billion in movie sales revenue in 2004?

PSound 01-14-2011 02:59 PM

Just take a look at the DVD numbers in the two reports. The numbers have obviously been restated.

The old report you linked to states DVD did $22.8 billion in 2005. The report I linked to (released 8 days ago) shows DVD revenue at $18.9 billion. The numbers have been restated.

VHS did $4.4 Billion in 2004.

That's what DEG is saying

They changed their chart in 2008 to add UMD:

2007:

They added it to the category to capture that revenue. But releases (and revenue) did not even start until 2005.

Per the DEG, VHS did $4.4 billion in 2004.
