Default Comcast says 400 HD channels this year and 800 in 2008

Never before have we had so many options for getting HD content, but these marketing claims are getting out of control. DirecTV kicked it off at CES this year, claiming 100 national HD channels, then followed up with commercials just to make sure everyone got the word. The cable companies responded by suing, and now in what we can only call: if you can't beat em' join em', a Comcast exec announced that they will have 400 HD channels this year, and 800 in 2008. Never-mind the fact that there are nowhere near that many HD channels of available content, but 800 quality HD channels would take up almost 11 Gbps of throughput (using today's technology). So in order to make this work, we presume they will need to deploy Switched Digital Video, which is great and all, but renders every CableCARD device made today obsolete.

400 HD Channels? My Comcast service now only offers about 20 (including subscription services).

It does seem a little fishy because there aren't that many HD channels. A lot of new ones will launch within a year but I don't think anywhere close to that many.

Switched Digital Cable will mess up a lot of DVRs though I heard. I have a rental DVR from Time Warner so hopefully they won't make their own boxes useless if Time Warner follows suit.

comcast lost huge points with me when they replaced adelphia here in colorado springs becuase i no longer get hdnet, hdnet movies or hdppv (which really sucks when you pay 40-50 bucks for a crappy sd picture for ufc and boxing fights

I think the best package Comcast offers gives you about 200-250 channels. I get like 100 or so, but there is some bigger package that costs a fortune that comes with every movie channel ever, and some obscure sports networks. However, I'm pretty sure there's not even 400 SD channels available.

If they do have to use Switched cable, those who rent the boxes from Comcast should receive the upgrade. It'll be a big expense to Comcast, as they'll have to replace millions of the current Motorola boxes.

They hae HDPPV in New Jersey, I never use it, but it is availible. I'm sure this is including all the local channels of the nation, so a customer probably won't get that amount of channels, that is just what comcast will have as a national average of channels in hd.

This is B.S. Their claim of that many HD channels is taking into account their On Demand channels.
