Jake Speed (1986) Story: The Basics

Jake Speed is the lead character in some of the biggest page-turners of the 1940s. When a young girl is kidnapped and her sister begs the real-life Speed for help, he must find a way to be as gallant as the book hero whose creation he's inspired.

Jake Speed (1986) Video Review: The Basics

The transfer for Jake Speed Blu-ray by Arrow Video looks very good with no signs of edge enhancement or haloing / ringing (I hate those dreaded artifacts). The film grain is quite consistent; barring a few poorly lit scenes towards the end in the mansion. However, poorly lit scenes also exhibit a little noise; it's a not a deal breaker but it is there. Color looks very natural. Overall this transfer is decent, but I think more could have been done to help with film grain by a 4K scan. There is a few upscaled shots that look like stock shots, but not many. I think the bitrate could have been increased to avoid some issues in poorly lit scenes and noise, but overall this is a fairly decent looking Blu-ray.

NOTE - How do Arrow Video get their menus looking so good? For me they look better than 4K menus, they are clean and not edged out like many menus I see. A small thing but it's nice that Arrow do care even about the small things.

VIDEO SCORE = 4 out of 5
THE BASICS: DECENT LOOKING DISC, BUT NOT PERFECT

Jake Speed (1986) Audio Review: The Basics

The audio is mono and I wasn't expecting much here, it is a sound of the times, and is pretty flat sounding.

AUDIO SCORE = 3 out of 5
THE BASICS: AVERAGE

How I Review: The Basics

I just write what I see, nothing super in depth; just what I see. Do I see noise in the blacks? Edge enhancement? Digital Issues? Scaling Problem? I will let you know if I see any errors in the discs; and explain how good they really look. Same with the audio; a very simple review method. I have no agenda other than finding and reporting what I see and hear. My reviews will not get a reference certificate unless its flawless; and I will not be giving out 10/10 or 5/5 video / audio without merit. I'm going to keep this really simple; and I hope you enjoy that side of my Reviews. Thank you.
