Default Streaming H.264 and Mpeg4 to the 360

Okay this is kinda pissing me off. Looking at the Video FAQ posted, there is a way to stream the above file formats with WMP 11:

22. How can I get Windows Media Player 11 to stream MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 to my console?

By default, Windows Media Player 11 does not support MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264. You can either convert your MPEG-4 Part 2 and H.264 content to WMV or you can install a 3rd party MP4 DirectShow decoder pack to import MPEG-4 part 2 and H.264 files into your library. Once they are in your library they can be streamed to your console just like WMVs.
Where is that decoder pack? I can't find it.

I can't find it either.

The whole H.264 implementation is pretty disappointing. Because you can't stream it off a PC, I tried putting an H.264 720p file on a USB drive and the XBOX gave an error message, saying the file type wasn't supported. Granted, I didn't try a standard def file, but what the hell is the point of only enabling SD support when it's a high def console?

I can play mp4 files back on my PC inside WMP but I can't remember which one of the codec packs I installed added this support. I do have Nero 7, Quicktime Alternative and PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra installed. I'll have a look after work on which enabled support. I think you can also use ffdshow which is available from the same place as Quicktime Alternative http://www.free-codecs.com

I don't have a problem playing them in WMP, it's getting them to show up in my library so they can be streamed.

From the FAQ is says you can stream them with the Zune Software. You just can't with WMP without a plug-in... very disappointing. If you're going to require additional software, then what's wrong with linking to it?

I've used WMV Transcode to stream DivX files to the 360 but it defeats the whole point of having native support for mpeg4/h264 if you need to do this. This is in Media Center connecting to a XP MCE 2005 PC not from the dashboard

Kinda odd, but alot of my videos that I have worked before the update...don't work now. Or it's taking awhile to stream it over..

Anyone else have that problem?

glad to know im not the only person having this problem. I converted ALOT of files to WMV format and now only a handful of them work... with no rhyme or reason. Most of the videos are episodes of 30 rock and bsg that i converted using vlc. they worked fine before but now they don't.... they will actually lock up my xbox when i try to play them and eventually i get an error message. i am VERY disappointed.

Man, so I'm currently watching a blu-ray rip of Pirates of the Caribbean 2 on my Xbox 360, and holy cuss, this looks great. it's great to think that a 720p video can fit on an 8gb DL-DVD disc and look the same as it would streaming off of a 50gb blu-ray, at least on my 720p tv. the only downside to this is that i had to convert the audio to stereo, but since my surround sound setup is really only a faux-surround system of my own design, it still sounds fully enveloping. a nice solution until a winner is chosen in this format war.

and the last time i checked i was supposed to be editing my own movie, so...i better get to it.

What are you guys using to transcode to WMV format? I've been using WinAVI, which is okay but very, very slow. Transcoding a 720p movie takes 20 hours+ on my admitedly crusty old PC. (P4 3ghz)

I haven't had much luck with the 360's H.264 MP4 playback as it seems to reject most of the files I've tried feeding it. It will play video podcasts okay, but 720p MKVs I've switched to MP4 files it always refuses to play.
