Lightbulb Console sales figures

I thought it would be interesting to bring together information about console sales figures to one thread.

The following information is often posted by some forum members:

What I'd like to point out is that nextgenwars.com is a completely annonymous source that can not be verified and their numbers appear dubious. At the last check nexgenwars numbers were wired to rise at a rate of around 5xPS3, 55x360 and 550xWii evey minute. To make those figures more readable they are equivalent to 216,000 PS3, 2,376,000 Xbox 360, and 23,760,000 Wii per month. All numbers look a bit unrealistic and I'll talk about it on future posts below.

Projected sales from the companies themselves:

Microsoft is aiming to reach a total 10 million sales by end of year. According to this source http://ncroal.talk.newsweek.com/default.asp?item=283363 MS had only sold through 4,800,000 untill the end of October therefore Microsofts ambitious monthly projection = 2,600,000 a month till the end of the year.

Sony last promised 500,000 consoles for launch plus 130,000 every week after that or about 1,280,000 by end of year. According to very early numbers from Japan it looks like they may have only hit about 80% of their launch target. Monthly projection adjusted to 80% = about 700,000 a month till end of the year.

Nintendo promised 800,000 consoles for launch and 4,000,000 by end of year. There are no early indications that they have or have not met their target. Monthly projection = 2,600,000 a month till end of the year.

As far as the manufacturers are concerned, compared to nextgenwars.com PS3 seems to be seriously underestimated, 360 seems to be underestimated and Wii seriously overestimated though since Wii just launched they probably sold like hot cakes and those numbers should fall down pretty soon.

Actual facts:

I'll be quoting this link http://ncroal.talk.newsweek.com/default.asp?item=283363.

Historically Sony has been the only company able to maintain 300,000+ sales per month with the PS2. Can we believe that they will sell less than 300,000 PS3 especially during it's launch window? I don't think so.

Microsoft Xbox 360 has so far been underselling it's predecessor Xbox. They have only been able to sell over 300,000 units during the first month of launch. The actual number of 360 units sold in October was just 218,000. One very optimistic analyst is predicting up to 3 million sales in Nov+Dec but he was previously off by an error of 45% for the month of October.

Can Microsoft really pull off the impossible and have a record breaking number of sales in the last 2 months of the year? Does nexgenwars smell of HS?

Let's wait and see but in 40 days from now you can quote me saying 8 million 360s maximum.

Maybe, but with the holiday season fast approaching and stocks of PS3 and Wii very limited globally, I think the 360 will have brisk sales in the US and Europe.

Especially with the PS3 delayed till next year. People who were planning PS3 as a holiday gift may just go to XB360.

Just as a note, I think what nextgenwars does is take actual numbers when they're released which generates an algorithm to show where the sales are 'about' and they correct it each time.

He's talking about Europe where the console doesn't launch until next year.

It's true that the lack of PS3s will be pushing people to buy 360s but many already said "The main reason 360 sales have been slow is because of people waiting to get a PS3" and I am not sure so many will give up at the last mile.

Also Wii is supposed to have 4 million consoles which is going to satisfy quite a few customers for now.

I'm a follower of financial analysts and such, and so far MS overestimated every sales figure so until there is something to show that they started doing proper estimates I'm remaining skeptical.

Amazon UK opened their pre-orders for the Wii yesterday morning - they sold out in 7 minutes!

Shows what Sony is missing on, a lot of people (especially parents) will spend the money allocated for a PS3 on either a 360 or Wii.

Yeah, I'm sure if they had the units they'd be glad to take people's money (or to give money away if they are selling at a loss)....
