Default Info on the 360 HD-DVD drive from the Xbox Team

Just saw this posted on the Xbox Team blog and thought I'd pass it along to everyone here. It's an interesting read that goes into all the heavy lifting the Xbox 360 does just to get HD-DVD running on the system so we can enjoy it. I think it's interesting that just the HD-DVD function alone takes 4.7 million lines of code in the Xbox 360 Dashboard. It also answers a question I know someone on here had. Audio is taken off the disc and re-encoded in Dolby Digital (even DTS). I wonder how that will effect audio quality? Just have to wait and see.

"All 6 of Xbox 360's hardware threads are hard at work while playing back an HD DVD. At the moment, the player software pushes Xbox 360 harder than any other (save, perhaps, Gears of War during some particularly busy parts of the game)."

I can't wait!

Thanks for the link Dusto - a very interesting read!

Neither can I, I just bought my first two HD-DVD titles in preparation for getting the player. (Batman Begins and Bourne Supremacy)

Bourne Supremacy - excellent movie. Hope you enjoy it! I've just ordered Batman Begins so haven't seen it yet.

Well if you're a fan of the comics then you're in for a treat. This was one of the films of last year for me!

Great read DustoMan. It's interesting to learn about all this stuff.

It really answers the question, "why is the Toshiba so slow" If the 360, with all three processors is being taxed, imagine what one porcessor is being asked to do.

One of my concern though, is that if all of the processors are bing used will that mean the console sound like a jet is about to take off when playing HD-DVD's?

Personally, I think most of the noise is from the CD spinning up in the 360. When I'm streaming or playing a Arcade game on the system I really can't hear it too much. It will all depend on how loud the HD-DVD drive will be. I don't think it should be though, as I think the newer 360s are shipping with quieter drives so I'm sure Microsoft is aware of the issue. On a site note, I read on one of the gaming blogs that the PS3 is virtually silent.

Yes, most of the noise is from the disc spinning so fast. It's that way on both my 360's.

What happened to the anti-noise generators all those years ago?
