Default Audio quality w/ 360 when playing HD DVDs

I know the drive hasn't been released yet, but I'm wondering if since the 360 only outputs standard 5.1, will the mixes sound the same as standard DVDs? Or will we possibly get a better soundtrack anyway because it is being down-converted from a better format?

Thoughts?

Maybe we can get a firmware update that would allow the 360 to output DTS when decoding DD 5.1+ or TrueHD

Whilst there is no firm proof of this yet, I would imagine the sound will still be significantly better than the current DD/DTS codecs. Time will tell...

Question

I thought it was down to your AV receiver to code the DTS or Dolby D sound I have watched DTS movies on my 360!

I hope we can get something so it does play DD+ or TrueHD!

That would be awesome!

Does the audio volume seem quieter then when playing a DVD or game? I've had to really crank up the volume in order to hear HD-DVDs.

Depends on how the disc was encoded. Same way DTS generally is louder than dolby on the same encoding. Last Samurai was really quiet but M:I:III was a decent level in relation to game play levels.

It decodes true hd, but outputs it as regular 640kbps ac3 ... the 360 doesn't have the necessary hdmi or analog output.

That's what I thought, but even in its compressed form it theoretically should sound better than DD.

From all reports, it does.

So far it appears that the DD+ tracks are much quieter than the traditional DD and TrueHD tracks, especially through the add on. I have to really crank up the volume on my receiver to get an acceptable sound level on DD+ HD DVDs. They also seem to lack a lot of depth and bass, which is especially frustrating when the codec is technically better than traditional DD+. I'm hoping this will get firmware fix from MS sometime soon to improve the DD+ to DD conversion process, otherwise I may move to a standalone Toshiba player.
