Red face Xbox 360 Upscaling

Is it only the HD DVD drive that upscales (if it does at all) my 360 runs through HDMI but I can't really tell much difference between a DVD in my Xbox or my HD DVD drive.

The XBOX 360 itself will upscale as well. The HD DVD addon drive only sends data to the XBOX 360, which in turn processes the data for playback.

Question

Here's a good question. Can you turn upscaling off?

here's an answer though...set your 360 display settings to the lowest available.

Remember though that for DVDs, if you are connected over component, it only plays back at 480p. To get anything higher, you either need HDMI or VGA.

I also concur though, why wouldn't you want to upscale? The 360 scaling chip looks fantastic!

Is that right Dust? I thought it upscales everything up to 720p/1080i via component, and 1080p if you use HDMI or the PC connector.

Because of copy protection rules equipment manufacturers have to follow, this is what the 360 can display up to for component video:
DVDs - 480p
HD-DVDs - 1080i
Games - 1080p (if your TV accepts 1080p over component)

VGA or HDMI will display everything up to 1080p because HDMI is digital with HDCP and VGA is an "approved" connection for copy protected media.

Do streamed movies get upscalled or do they remain native? Seems like they are.
