Default 360 player or hd-a2/a3

which is the better bargain here, i know i can get an xbox player for a little cheaper than an hd-a2, but am i going to be missing any functionality or getting a lesser presentation in terms of menus, etc? also i live in canada and the 360 player is a little easier for me to get my hands on. can anyone clarify this with me?

I have both - the add-on and the HD A2. I will say, the add-on is sweet because you can use it with your PC - and can snag one used for like $125 shipped. However, you can't beat the HD A2. You can play it without firing up your 360, and the images are much, much more sharper. I was also noticing lag with my 360 HD DVD player.

I got a sweet deal - 9 HD DVD movies (including the Heroes boxset) with my 360 add-on.

You get the same presentations, though you will be online with the 360 add-on if you're on Live. And the HD A2 takes a while to boot up too.

Still, I would go with the HD A2/A3 FTW ...

standalone for sure. if anything ever happens to your 360 (knock on wood), you would still be able to watch movies while your 360 is in service. trust me it's happened before and it sucks not having both.

best buy or amazon seem to have the best deals as far as freebies included goes.

I got mine from Best Buy - not sure if they are doing the free 3 HD DVD in-store or not, but you definitely get the 5 free mail-in movies ...

Still gotta mail that crap off ...

I had the add-on and just could not stand the noise from the 360, too distracting. I bought the A2 for $98 and am very happy, picture quality appears to be better and no noise distraction..

And you do can HD sound with stand alone, can't have that with the 360 addon. I got the add on as my first HD-DVD player and used it for a year. When Best Buy had the HD-A2 sale, I snagged a player and 8 movies and sold my add on for the same price I bought the A2 for. Reallly was a no brainer for me, I like how much quieter the A2 is and the fact that I can now use HDMI because my 360 doesn't have it.
