Typically, they have released updates for the HD DVD add-on separately and more frequently. I personally think the DVD upconversion via the add-on is very good, especially over HDMI. If you are using component, the DVD upconversion is limited to 480p due to DRM. VGA will give you 1080p, if your TV accepts it.

I looked at alot of TV shows, and it seemed most of them if not all of them were 480P, with the 720P greyed out. Does Live know what cable you're using when you download shows?

No, it does not. A decent amount of the content on XBL, especially the television shows, is not in HD.

Look for a small banner on the right under the show description that says, "HD AVAILABLE" for the HD TV shows.

I thought the xbox only upconverted over hdmi/vga? Is 480p actually considered a hd setting or a standard progressive setting?

As far as I'm aware 480p is progressive.
