Default internal hd-dvd for xbox 360

I have read rumors online about microsoft making a new xbox 360 unit down the road that will in fact have a built in internal hd-dvd drive in it that also does standard dvd upconversion up to 1080p (ugraded 1080p model). Have any of you guys heard anything about this?

If that happens the resulting HD DVD Xbox 360 will not be cheap. Toshiba is making the external HD DVDs drive for Microsoft and they are a steal for only $200, I imagine that if Toshiba made an internal drive for Microsoft it would add at least $250.00 to the cost of the system.

One reason for this is the size difference between the external HD DVD drive and the size an internal one would have to be to fit inside a "normal" Xbox 360. Making a smaller more compact drive probably costs more than making a large one.

I can see this happening at some point down the line although I imagine we wouldn’t see it for at least 18 months. They will not want to alienate their existing customer base and they have to roll out the external hd-dvd player yet!

Yea by the time they do release it im sure the HD-DVD will go down a lot in price and shouldnt be much different than what it is now. Just like how ps2 released their slim line, even though it didnt have a next generation dvd in it.

Toshibas shipping a lot of the slimline drives. There are 7 vendors using their drive in laptop configs. By next year the production should be up and the price should be cheaper. Microsoft can jettison the DVD drive and apply that money towards a slimline HD DVD drive. They save money on the utilizing the base unit power supply as well.

Here's the Digitimes article that spawned the talk

The rumor is that they are going to release it at the end of the 1st quarter '07 after the HD-DVD add-on sales drop off. It does make some sense. They have to add game play through HD-DVD discs or risk being completely stomped out by the PS3, since the Xbox 360 1080p patch will upscale the 720p native games to 1080p (like blowing up a picture with little detail in it). If the other report is correct, they probably won't be able to do 1080p upscaling (due to the very limited 10MB buffer in the Xbox 360).

Q1 2007 seems far too early - I personally would have thought around Christmas 2007 at the earliest to fight off the PS3 competition.

I agree. The PS3 won't be available in the type of quantities that invite impulse purchases until end of Q1 2007 or later. MS has time to modify the Xbox 360 by late summer for the holiday season next year. No rush they already have millions of Xbox in homes today.

Well microsoft/toshiba will have to do something fairly soon, the Toshiba HD-XA2 will be the only stand alone HD-DVD player that will have 1080p output while Samsung Sony Panasonic and Pioneer will all have their players that can all output 1080p by then. That is assuming that they dont all get delayed....again.
