Standalone so you can get Lossy Audio over HDMI. The fan noise is just to much on the 360.

On my 360's it's not the fan noise, it's about equal to the PS3. It the spinning of the 360 internal drive. Which isn't used when watching an HD DVD. My 360 playing an HD DVD is about the same loudness as the PS3 when playing a BD. You can hear them during quiet passages in the movie but at normal volumes you don't hear it.
The Standalone player is the better deal for audio. If you don't have a system with HDMI and don't plan on getting one anytime soon, then the HD DVD add on is a good choice for now since it's cheaper. Then if you upgrade your audio gear in the future you can get a current HD DVD stand alone player which should cost even less by then.

Theres like a bazillion topics about this already.

Standalone = lossless audio, and true 1080p.

hd dvd add on = non 1080p. no lossless audio, loud ass 360.

Yeah..

You will get 1080p with a VGA connection or HDMI connection. Buy the $39 VGA connector and you will be able to reach 1080p.

1080p was added on in a firmware update last year.

how can anyone with a sound system that can even play lossless audio even notice the 360's noise?? I still have an optical audio setup and i never hear it. My projector is louder than the 360. hell a dreamcast is louder than it... anyone remember that? turn the power on... BEEEEEEEEEP

Um... you will get 1080p with the 360 Add-on through component as well, as long as your HDTV accepts 1080p through component (mostly Samsungs and LGs as far as I know), as it does that for its games.

I still vote for the stand alone player though if you have the option. I had the 360 HD drive first before i returned it to get the HD-XA2, and I found that both the picture and especially the sound were much better. Plus the standalone players upconvert your regular DVDs MUCH better than the 360's upconverter, which really is one of the poorest I've seen unfortunately.

I only have the add-on and I can tell you I wish I had a standalone. Don't get me wrong, at the time, the add-on was an easy/cheap way to get hd dvd in my house. But now I have a smaller hdtv that I use for gaming and a larger hdtv that I like to watch movies on. It sucks unplugging the 360 and add-on to put it on the big screen if we want to watch an hd dvd on it. Considering the huge power cord, the a/v cord, the add-on power cord, the usb cable that plugs into the 360 and the 360 + add-on themselves, a standalone would be nice. Besides, at this point you can find a standalone for the price of an add-on.

I think it depends on your set-up, I'm kinda happy with the add-on. If my XBOX was behind the door like everything else the noise would be fine but I have it on to the the tv(its an old rear projection nice and big) but with the audio cranked you can't hear it. During the holidays I plan on picking up a standalone for the bedroom which has a smaller CRT.
