ccording to NPD’s figures, the hardware sold 42,000 units in November and 50,000 in December.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier said that the life-to-date figure indicates a 2 percent attach rate to the Xbox 360 install base. The firm reported last night that life-to-date Xbox 360 sales in the US stand at 4.5 million units.
Wow that's a lot. Look for a bangin 2007 as Microsoft gets these drives into more and more homes.

The attach rate is interesting. If 2% holds true (and if i'm understanding what that means) then 20 million 360's would deliver 400,000 players by this time next year. Toshiba is saying 1.5 million units FY '07-'08 ending March, 2008 in primarily the US.

Theorectically, based on NPD plus Toshiba projections, there could be potentially 2 million dedicated HD DVD players owned exclusively by movie lovers. If the avg of 28 movies per HD DVD player is true, then sales of 56 million HD DVD's should impact "exclusivity" from at least 1 or 2 studios.

Should SONY sell 10million PS3's in the same time frame. They will need need every user to purchase 6 movies each to keep pace. I do not know how that may translate into a meaningful attach rate, for Blu ray movies. PS3 users will have to prove with their dollar (buying lots of BD movies) that a gaming machine is a viable alternative to traditional video players and can sustain the movie sales to keep Blu ray studios firmly entrenched.

All figures are from press releases and interviews I have run across. I had references documented but the thread was deleted so I will leave it to others to show better estimates at this time.

the thing i love about it is, that you KNOW, that when someone buys and hd add on, their using it for hd dvd's. for some reason, people love to believe that ALL/MOST the people buying a ps3, are using it to get HD movies too. shit, people don't even know how many people who have a ps3, have an hd tv....

Normally, I would agree. However, in the current case of the PS3, there are not many good games for it right now. So the best advantage to buying a PS3 *right now* is for the Blu-Ray capability, not gaming.

Looks like the top game is Resistance, but it is only SD on my HD TVs older than 2 years (ie: 720p is downconverted to 480p on 1080i only TVs). So the best game on the PS3 is only in SD. Pfft. I'll pass for games. However, as a BR player, its getting awesome reviews (except for the lack of IR remote).

Just my 2 cents, but keep in mind, I'm not a gamer. I'm a movie watcher with HD, but I'm considering the PS3 just for BR.
