Default How quiet is an idle 360 supposed to be?

I know that the drive in the console makes an obnoxious amount of noise. I'm just talking about fan noise while the system is at the dashboard, or playing an HD-DVD. I have a launch unit and recently acquired the HD-DVD add-on. Love the drive, but the fan noise from the console is really killing me. Throughout any moderately quiet part of a movie, I can hear the fans constantly whirring and droning away, frequently changing pitch/speed. I hear so many accounts of people saying their consoles are "whisper quiet" when the system is at the dashboard, and I'm wondering if maybe I'm just overly sensitive to these things, or something is wrong with my console, because my console is anythign but "whisper quiet" UNLESS I'm playing a standard DVD. I sit about 4-5 feet away from the system, and aside from the air purifier in my room, I'd say the 360 is the noisiest piece of hardware I own.

Got mine a bit over 3 months ago, it's pretty quiet when the built-in optical drive isn't spinning. While I've never used a launch 360 in a quiet environment (only at store kiosks and the like), I've been told that it's significantly louder than the current versions.

I think the dashboard is reasonably quiet, although I can still hear it. It is a launch machine though and I've heard newer machines are much better.

Part of the "Mark II" 360 specs were for a processor change which would require less cooling and therefore less noise. I got mine mid-2006, and as long as the DVD (in console) drive isn't spinning, it's dead silent, which includes while watching HD DVDs.
