360 Leads Holiday Sales
But Nintendo was right on Microsoft's heels.
by Daemon Hatfield

January 2, 2007 - According to preliminary NPD data, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling console during the holiday season in the U.S. CNBC is reporting that Americans picked up two million units of Microsoft's system during the period.

But Nintendo was not far behind. In spite of limited availability, the Wii sold 1.8 million units from its launch until December 25. Sony only moved approximately 750,000 units of the PlayStation 3, due to manufacturing problems and decreased demand. Over the holidays, IGN repeatedly found PS3s available at retailers while no Wiis were in sight. The price of a PS3 on eBay has also dropped to around its MSRP, while the Wii is still selling for over twice its retail price.

NPD expects to release complete sales data for the holiday season later this month.

It's all a scam...the media is tricking us into thinking PS3 sales are slumping so we go out and buy more HD DVD players, when in fact PS3 has already surpassed sales expectations. Plus, everyone who owns a PS3 watches Blu Ray movies. It's a fact.

....or so the Blu Ray fanboys would have you believe

But in all seriousness this news doesn't surprise me at all. The Ps3 flopped. Sure it will still sell in 2007, but it didn't live up to the hype. Too expensive, not enough games, and forced Blu ray. Bad mistake by Sony. The ebay auctions and the aavailability in some stores, say it all.

Yeah I remember some people saying there would be 6 million PS3 ...then they dropped that to 4 million and finally they were bragging about a million PS3. Clearly the market for $600 consoles isn't the same as $300 consoles.

Does anyone know whether MS reached their projection of 10m units sold by the end of the year?
