This is one of my favourite movies, but I don't know how its dreamy visual style will transfer to HD DVD.

I've never seen this movie. How will I know if I like it enough to buy it? What movie is it comparable with?

Smile Excalibur

It's almost like what GLADIATOR would have been had it been released back then. The film (excalibur) has style and soul. In my opinion one of the best King Arthur tales ever filmed.

It's not quite serious like Gladiator. It mixes King Arthur mythology with some British humor and I didn't think it came off too well. The fight scenes and special effects are also very low budget. Wars between two factions are often dozen knights clumsily brawling with one another (Nothing like Gladiator, Braveheart, or any recent historical epics).

The PQ and AQ also leave a lot to be desired. Whether it's intentional or not, the image is very grainy and often out of focus with very few HD moments. Audio is also predominently upfront with very little surround material. Definitely not demo material for your HT system.
