This isn't my favorite Kubrick movie by a longshot, but I am definitely interested in seeing what this looks like on HD-DVD. I love the fact we are getting more 65mm based movies on this format.

I will not buy this one since it doesn't have a good replayability factor for me. Netflix will suffice.

This IS one of my favorite movies, and I am waiting desperately for the store I order my HD DVDs from to receive it and send it to me (actually, I have already received all other Universal titles scheduled for to be released with Spartacus, but not Spartacus!!!). Anyway, I for one am all in favor of good oldies being reissued in HiDef. Among the titles not annouced yet, think for example of Ben Hur, High Noon, Scaramouche...

I was privy to a HD demonstration of Spartacus on a format called VMD (Versatile MulitLayer Disc) and the pq looked great on a massive projector.

My concerns still remain about the classics though, how much difference will a high-def copy make when viewing it on a screen less than 42"...

Imho they can still offer alot, robin hood looks so much better i cant see how it wouldnt be a jump up for anyone using a tv smaller than 42".

I agree. I imagine I'll be mainly buying the classics I don't yet own on DVD (Forbidden Planet, Casablanca etc).

I bought the sd dvd a couple of years ago. And while there was some clean up a number of scenes were very grainy, dirty, etc. Was not impressed. I'm hoping the transfer will do this justice. Which is why I'll wait for the reviews before purchasing.
