Want do you think about Universals HD DVD quality?

I bought "Bruce Almighty" and "The Frighteners" . I was very disappointed with the quality of this discs. This HD DVDs are not better than my unconverted DVDs. I bought a HD DVD player to get Universal movies in HD. I also have a Blu Ray player and I like both systems, but I have to say my Blu Ray discs I bought recently from Sony look a lot better than Universals. I am not so worried about that Universal doesn't go neutral, because there HD products are not better than unconverted DVD's which I already have. Universal really need to work on there quality. I don't wanted to lift up Sony but when they got enough email about "the 5th Element" PQ they decided to bring out a remastered version. Point for Sony. Like I said I really like both systems, but I am more tend to Blu Ray now. I didn't buy any HD DVDs from the last Universal releases.

The Frighteners looks good. Bruce Almighty I don't own so I don't know.

Looks like an Upconvert? Simply not true. It may not be the most eye popping film in hd but it certainly is a hd copy.

I was disapointed with my copy of Bruce Almighty. It looked like a bad HD movie from my sat provider.

I was pleased with my copy of Sneakers though. :)

Andy Pennell, from the MSDN blogs, has made some coding to fix the extra content on the Bourne Supremacy disc, check it out: blogs.msdn.com/andypennell/archive/2007/05/16/no-more-letterboxed-widescreen-content-on-hd-dvds-please.aspx

Universal could work more with Microsoft on their quality control.

I wish people would leave Universal alone. Thier cataloge titles are not that bad. Think of how bad some of Lionsgates BD titles have been, AND SONY's early ones...THE TITLES THEY LAUNCHED BLU RAY WITH!!!! They were awful. At least Universal is producing titles. That is more than could be said for Fox Blu Ray. Fox blew smoke up everybody's butts at CES. They total pulled support for now with no explanation or no indication when they will be again. Universal is great!

Don't get me wrong, I love Universals movies. And I am upset with FOX and MGM of there lack of support for Blu Ray. What I am talking about is spending $25 for a movie I already have and have not a big improvement over the SD version. I really don't want to bash Universal, I really like there movies. But I think we can demand a better quality for there product, because in the end it is up to us if we buy it or not.

I've only been upset about the bad discs, but no complaints with the Picture Quality of Universal movies yet. Some of the old ones like Smokey look fantastic. I don't really care what this site or any other BD fan declares about the quality of Universal transfers, at the end of the day it's my own eyes and opinion that matter to me. I'll be the judge.

I am perfectly happy spending $25 (really less going through Amazon) if it is a movie I want to own. They may not be getting full restorations, but I feel the Universal releases are still being true to the HD masters they currently have and if we were to wait for them to go through the full restoration process for all these films, we could be waiting for years.

I have every confidence that Universal is indeed taking all the steps with the movies which really count commercially, such as Jurassic Park and others so those are the ones getting the fuller treatment. But I am still happy that they are not ignoring these other gems and still getting them to us now.

Yeah, years down the road some of them will likely be reissued, and I will rebuy them. So what, I am sure I will be excited to get them again ;)

I bought The Frighteners on HD DVD, watched and thought it looked great. I compared it to my DVD and I definatley see a difference. The DVD looks kind of washed and not as detailed, sharp, and vivid. For me, the upgrade was definatley worth it.

With such a HUGE release day coming up next week, YOU KNOW the Blu-Ray fan-boys will be on the edge of their seats, waiting for those first reviews to come out.
If Universal's titles next week are all pier 1-2 on PQ then a lot of what happened with Blu-Ray this week will be played down as nothing more than "yesterday's news". At least for the HD-DVD supporters.
However, With Universal releasing 11 titles next week, if they are sub-par transfers, I can almost guarantee one (or several) of them will start a smackdown forum that will be something like "we don't want crappy quality universal titles anyway."
I think Universal has done a fair job with thier recent releases. Next week will be a chance for Universal to make a real statement. If they are sub-par, I do think it could hurt them.
I think a lot of people avoid movies that don't have great reviews. I picked up Bruce Almighty because I Like the movie, and don't have it on DVD. But if I already had the DVD, then I MAY have avioded it.
I WOULD suggest people try http://www.hddb.net/index.php for reviews. Don't just trust ONE review for your movies.
