I was really pleased with the PQ. I have only seen the original DVD and for me this was a big upgrade. Glad I bought it, more importantly so was the wife !!!

I have the 20th Anniv DVD, that's why I'm having a hard time deciding if it's worth the upgrade from that. If the audio is better that would be worth it alone.

well just watched it again and aq is much better in th dolby hd so if you can use that then it's a winner....i have to say the pq is rather good to...it's kind of the same in most older movies the day light shots look great easliy pq 4, the club scenes by nature are smoke filled stage lights moving all around so it looks a little less pop but still looks great solid pq 3 but it would be hard to make it any better...i say if your a fan of the movie its a for sure buy....

Bumping this cause I got the HD DVD the other week.

I watched PURPLE RAIN for the first time on HD DVD and i've got a few impressions.

Despite the poor acting, this is an excellent film, even if it tends to be misogynist. Some of Prince's best music in a good story.

The video looked kinda what I expected it to look like. After all this is a low budget film shot back in the 80's, it will only look so good, so I wasn't expecting miracles and there aren't any. Color balance is all over the place, skin tones aren't exactly accurate and fine detail is not there. I think this is more or less the quality of the print. On the other hand, I didn't noticed dirt or scratches.

The TRUEHD is where I was suprised (and not in a good way). While I knew the film wouldn't look stellar, I was suprised how poor the audio was. Now, I understand this was recorded in the 80's but I figured at least the music sequences would sound good. No, not at all with the TRUEHD. It's a very compressed, muddy sounding track, even in lossless. Still and all, i'd take this over the DD+.

Dust off the HD DVD and give the old player a spin.

"So tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999!"
Correction, let's make that 2009.
