Default HD-DVD Import Pitch Problems

I recently watched my first HD-DVD import, Brotherhood of the Wolf and the opening montage sequence of other Studio Canal HD titles got me really stoked about picking some up, Serpico and the Lynch films in particular. Although, I have read that these titles' audio suffer from pitch problems. Would people who have seen these say that the pitch issues are noticeable to the average viewer (I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination)? Also, does one's audio set-up make the pitch issues better or worse in any way? I am just using a basic Bose Cinemate 2 speaker set-up. Any light other users can shed on the issue is greatly appreciated.

yeah there are a few threads regarding pitch problems on the site. Use SEARCH to find them. It's only on like 5 titles maybe. It seems to vary in how much people notice it. 'Total Recall" abd "Basic Instinct" are mentioned the most. I own Serpico, and noticed nothing. HDDVDHeaven site has an article on this issue. check it out.

No, your equipment shouldn't make any difference - the audio pitch problem is cause when not correctly re-coding a PAL 25fps encode over to HD 24fps. While the sticky "Info on Importing HD DVD Ttiles" here in this forum has a lot of useful information, the AVSForum Import Thread gives a quick list on the first page with titles with pitch problems highlighted in red.

But even then the pitch issues varies. I've never heard/seen "Basic Instinct", but Josh Zyber gave a review on DVDTalk that said it sounded like the actors inhaled helium before saying their lines.
On the other hand, I have Total Recall that is noted with a pitch issue, but I didn't notice it at all and think it's a nice improvement over the BD version.

I also have Brotherhood of the Wolf and think it's fantastic. I just ordered two more imports this weekend from Xploited cinema - Hannibal Rising (Polish) and The Jackal (German).

The pitch problem only occurs on a select couple of Studio Canal releases. It's not something that structurally happens on many European titles, it's just a few isolated cases.

No worries - it's like only a half dozen titles affected with audio pitch issues, and all early Studio Canal (French) releases. They most likely tired to re-use their existing PAL masters for HD. I haven't heard of any issues from the German releases - or Polish or Italian. Some of the UK releases are just re-issues of Studio Canal titles - Rambo 1-3 most notably. Brotherhood of the Wolf & Terminator2 UK are also SC re-issues, but don't have any pitch issues.

Which FF are you getting - the new Silver Surfer?

from my own experience the following movies have no pitch problems:

underworld and underworld evloution
bridge to terabithia
fantastic four

slight pitch problem:
Mr and Mrs Smith - pretty much at the start of the movie and for some reason from my observation, it was only Brad Pitt's voice.
