Default Toshiba HD-A20 vs HD-A20KU

Is it the same unit? If not any difference? I've tried to do a little research but I'm not to versed on the HD DVD hardware so I didn't find anything. Is there a difference here? I keep seeing these Toshiba HD DVD players that have 'KU' in the model #. They seem to be a bit less expensive, just wondering if there is a reason for this. Toshiba HD-A20KU tested working for $50 shipped? Sounds like a good deal to me if it will do 1080P but I really have no clue.

Yes, the HD-A20 and HD-A20KU are one and the same. It's more commonly referred to just as the A-20; the KU at the end means it's the US model - maybe Canadian models have a different XX after A20?.

That was a very nice deal, no wonder it is gone.

Does the A20 have bitstream HD audio capabilities or does it only decode all formats and DTS core via HDMI? And does it output 1080p/24?

I will say that I think it does have bitstream capabilities and does do 1080p/24. I'm can't say definitively, though :-#

The A20 does output 1080p/24. But it can only bitstream DVD audio. All HD DVD audio is decoded internally and output as PCM. It decodes DD+ and TrueHD, but only the DTS core.

So what does that mean in laymen's terms?

It means the A20 decodes Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD audio in full resolution and quality. For the few US releases and several European HD DVD releases that have DTS-HD High Resolution or DTS-HD Master Audio, it cannot not decode that audio in full resolution. It extracts the DVD quality DTS audio at 1.5 mbps and decodes that. So, for HD DVDs with DTS-HD HR or MA, you get multi-channel DTS audio, just not at full, high-definition quality.
