Hmm no replies yet?
This thing sure has a hard time with combo discs. Even with the 4.0 firmware it's hit or miss. I tested 10 combo discs and somtimes they lock up sometimes they don't. Somtimes they don't even work at all. Might have to hold on to my 360 add-on afterall.

You did not mention what you have the A30 connected to?
Do you have the manual for your A30? If not, peruse the Toshiba site and download one? It has useful info in it to guide you.

My A30 is connected to a Sharp 46" 1080p lcd via hdmi
Enhanced Black - I leave it off.
RBG Output - normal
Picture mode - auto

My combo discs are in pristine condition and play fine in my A30 with the 4.0 firmware so far. The couple I had trouble with were defective and the replacements worked perfectly.

Sorry. 46" Toshhiba Regza 46RF350U hooked up with hdmi. Have the same settings as you.
My discs are mint too. I guess some people just get luckier than others when it comes to combo discs.

If I understand the manual correctly, using a hdmi connection means that the enhanced black and rgb output range settings do nothing. The picture mode setting definitely makes differences. After playing around with it for a bit, I settled on auto.
I hear folks speak of combo disc problems - so far I've done ok, but who knows what problems may be lurking in my combo disc collection . . .

btw - A30 manual . .

GJ, have you done the 4.0 firmware update yet? Toshiba is great about HD DVD customer support; they mail me firmware updates on a regular basis; on DISCs ready to go.hhhhdvd

Yes first thing I did was update it to 4.0. It plays everything fine but on a few combo discs it locked up in areas. When I tried them again they played through those spots. Fast and Furious Tokoyo Drift wouldn't work at all. I tried it again later and then it worked. I had a hard time with that one too on my hd add-on. It's actually the 3rd disc of that movie I've got since I've replaced it twice.

While I only have a few dual format hd-dvd's for my A30 what I have found is they are VERY sensitive to dirt. Much more so than regular disk, regular HD-DVD's or blu-rays. These dual hd-dvd disks seem to need to be spotless or they freeze up.
