yah my tv has stretch mode but it wont let me stretch anything on hd dvd. i read in the instructiom book that anything with 4:3 ratio will stay at that ration on the hd a2

It is your HD-DVD player adding the bars on the screen. Check your settings on the player itself, I forgot if there is one in there, if worst comes to worst, change your display options to a 4 X 3 tv screen shape. Keep in mide though vieing that picture on a widescreen tv filling the screen will give you a distorted "stretched" image. The bars on the side are normal for fullscreen material on a widescreen tv to ajust for the picture differences. IMO it is much better and less annoying to watch the movie/show WITH the bars on rather than without.

I believe it's something you are going to have to deal with. The A2 seems to override most tv's on screen size settins when it's on that certain channel. I for one enjoy it, it upconverts but doesn't stretch the picture of my shows.

Don't think you can stretch 4:3 material on the A2. In general you really shouldn't want to use stretching. The distortion it causes to the picture is far worse to look at then the black bars IMO. as above poster noted.

This occurs when I have the A20 going thru the HDMI cable.....when I put it thru the component cable it is stretched to full screen...no bars.

Many devices (tv's etc.) won't let you "stretch" or access "zoom" features when connected via HDMI. My Sony TV is like this. Not sure why this is.
