Default HD-A20 1080p problem.

Just replaced my A2 w/ an A20 and when I switch into 1080p in the setup screen all the icons start to slighty jitter or vibrate. When switching back to 1080i or 720p all the icons stop slightly jittering. I also notice this in the menus of movies when set to 1080p, but while in movie i cannot see the jittering in 1080p. Just curious what this means and if this is normal. This has been tested on stock firmware and the new 1.5. My TV is a Samsung HLS-5687W 1080p DLP.

Don't really know what to say but my boy picked one up and so far so good.

I lent him my Children of Men, Smokin' Aces and they both played flawlessly with a 1.0/T20M.

Exchange it.

Your TV doesn't accept a 1080p signal. I believe you have a "wobbulation" set, look it up. It has a 1080p screen but has to convert a 1080i signal.

I am also having this exact same problem with my HL-S6187w which is basicly the same tv just bigger in size with the a20. i went to bestbuy and had them try a brand new a20 on the floor model tv just liek mine and it does the exact same thing... what confuses me more is that it will accept a 1080p signal fine with no jittering from ps3 and a samsung bluray player. it also does not jitter with 360 set at 1080p with vga cables. so is it a compatability issue or tv jsut not work with a20?

I have the same problem and I have a Sony XBR2 60 inch RPTV. Also I had some problems with children of men and Smoking Aces. Amazon sent me replacements and they work. Also, my bubby has the Mits 831 series with the same issue. It’s a great player, but is freezes on some of my regular DVD, but no problem on the Oppo or PS3.

my problems arent with movies its in a20 menu screen as soon as i set resolotion to 1080p.. if i start movie from a distance you can baraely tell unless you open up dvd menu or its on a still scene they you will notice that it is still jittering it is really fustrating.

Default Toshiba Bull Sh....

I had been the same F**** problem when I changed my HD - XA1 for the new HD - XA2, the problem is: When I use HDMI for video 1080 p and connect optical or coaxial audio output to my hometheatre the new device XA2 was turn off after 40 minutes.

I put a lot of pressure and hard complaint by e-mail and phone to Toshiba USA, Toshiba JAPAN and Toshiba Mexico in the beggining they fail about customer support because never tryed to help me.

But I bought the XA2 in SEARS here in Mexico and I returned to the store and was the same with around 6 different stores. Inmediatly the called me to my house a lot worry about stores complaint because they said that is going to returned all Toshiba HD-DVD Products from the store inside.

After I have been fighted with them a lot of time and sepnt time and money, finally they think the work was done, I have a week using my XA2 and still doing well. More Toshiba offers me now a indefinetly support until I feeling happy with the product and of course they donīt wish that I will return the product to SEARS, they offers me returned my money by themselves if something happends.

By the way, try to do it the same isnīt a normal situation is a real technician problems in this 2nd. Generation.

As you can see from my signature I only have a 720p set for my HT setup so I am talking out loud but it seems to me that there are a lot of issues with 1080p TV sets. I think the portion of the blame was on the TV industry using "1080p" as a means to sell TV sets that have true 1080 resolution. Not stating that these sets may have issues with 1080p signals.

My second thought is isn't 1080/24 more desirable than 1080/60? At least in terms of movies? If so wouldn't a 1080i signal more closely represent a 1080/24 signal in terms of frame rate?

I know there have been many discussions between 1080i vs 1080p. Just thought I would ramble a bit.

Did some more research. I have the same problem on the menu like you. The A20 is not a true 1080p, it is a 1080i and it converts it to 1080P, unlike the higher end model which is true 1080p without any internal processing

Review:

"The HD-A20 didn't fare much better on the two high-def test discs that I spun: Silicon Optix HD HQV and the new Digital Video Essentials HD DVD. In both cases, test patterns indicated that less-than-perfect 1080i-to-1080p deinterlacing was going on inside the A20. Deinterlacing? Hmm ... I thought that movies were encoded on HD DVD in 1080p format! As it turns out, HD DVD player manufacturers get the option to pull video from the disc in 1080i (interlaced) format and let the player then perform deinterlacing to get back to 1080p. As the tests indicate, Toshiba opted to employ this roundabout technique in the HD-A20."

You can set it to 1080i and let your TV do the work or let the A20 an see which one is better. I am kinda bummed about it saying 1080P, when its not 100% true 1080P. thanks Toshiba. However, I had it for my than 30 days so I can't exchange it for the more expensive one. But it is still a great player. I sold my XBOX HD drive with some movies and got it, so it was no lost to me. I just wished Tosh was honest about it. Also a couple of other magazines says the same thing about the Internal 1080i to 1080P.

I'm running the a20 via HDMI into a Sharp Aquos 46 inch TV (LC46D82U) and have not found any issues. Even before I ran the firmware upgrade.

So far I've watched Planet Earth, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Batman Begins all in HD. Perfect picture.

FYI, the Sharp also accepts 1080p via component from my xbox. One of the reasons why I picked it.

Point to note: the oppo dv981hd upconverts better than the a20, but I'm ok with the slight diff.
